Disappointment in the Paramilitary

This may not be germain to the topic...but I squared the top of the exposed tang
and it makes a great firesteel striker.

P.S ... I also avoid the tang issue by placing the clip on the left side and carrying it
in my right pocket. That way the tang is against the seam.

So, I will get it on a return to them tomorrow. This makes me feel a bit guilty, because the choice to purchase the knife was totally my own and I was prepared to accept my mistake. I use all my knives and this one would have sat in my box unused. Thanks to New Graham, I will return it and trade it for another Spyderco model that will be more to my liking.

Cool, and no reason to feel guilty about a return/swap. Its there policy, and shows what a Tip Top Spyderco dealer they are:thumbup:

I called New Graham today and they demonstrated why I have purchased a number of knives from them and will continue to do so. They said, "simply send it back for a refund or a trade, just include a note". WOW! The knife is still new and in the box. Never carried, sharpened, or used to cut anything. Michael @NG is a top notch guy. That is why so many forum members buy from them. I have bought several knives from them and their service is #1. I have 4 Paramilitary's and like the knife very much. At first I wasn't too fond of it but the more I played around with it, the more it grew on me.

Being a lefty the knife is not designed for me but it opens and closes so easily that I hardly notice the clip location. I do agree that the butt end does stick up a lot in your pocket but that has not bothered me as I'm not carrying to be discrete.

At the end of the day though, you carry a knife that "feels right" to you. I have bought a couple of Spyderco knives that people around here love but just did not fit for me personally. I have an SS Delica and a D'Fly that get zero pocket time.

The Delica is too slick in my hand and bulky for its size and the D'Fly is too awkwardly small for me to use. Every knife is not a hit with everyone but, I can say without reservation that Spyderco has me as a permanent customer.

I find it hard to buy anything but Spyderco.

Re: leapinglizard

Don't feel guilty, Michael @ New Graham is a superb example of a retailer willing to stand up for any product he sells.

Just keep going back for more ;).

Regarding your choices, I would now suggest a Manix 2 as an alternative, or perhaps a FRN Stretch. The Manix 2 has the larger handle/smaller blade ratio seen in the Para, but with distinct ergos. It is however, rather heavier. The Stretch is a touch heavier, but has a thinner, longer blade, superb ergos and a nice index choil.

I'd agree except for the relative weights. The FRN Stretch II, at 95 grams, is lighter than the 108 gram Para. The 110 gram CF Stretch II is heavier than the Para, but by only 2 grams.

Ah, well, I was thinking of my CF Stretch. Haven't gotten a FRN one yet (waiting on that ZDP!). Also, I forgot, both my Para's are modded, so the lost G-10 may make the weight difference enough to be noticeable. Thanks for the correction Deacon.

I participated in a Paramilitary passaround, and I wasn't all that impressed with the knife either. The knife was fine, but it just wasn't for me. It felt too small if I held it normally, but too big if I choked up using the finger choil. I disliked the tip-down carry the most (which I never really liked anyway) because the part of the blade where the lock engages sticks out when the knife is closed, and would dig into my hand when I put my hand into my pocket for something other than the knife.

Spidy--- Yup---my CQC-7 is in the drawer.
I love the Hole and overall evolved design of the Para; the CPM D2, the recessed liners and the Compression lock is the schazzle. It's MY folder. ;)

I have a bunch of spydies and BM's and a pile of lesser junk, I gotta say my para trumps everything else for me, I was kind of suprised to hear someone think that a para handle was too short, that is one of the reasons I love it, an edc blade with a handle I can get a grip on, (I dont have small hands either) also it did take a while for me to get used to the compression lock, it takes a little while for it to "break in" and the blade shape simply kicks ass, full flat grind with a tip to do delicate work as well. Well, I hope you find something else to your liking. My Native was like that for me, I dont like the ergos, blade shape, cant flick it open, ect.
