Has anyone ever put just the handle slabs for the Sebenza in their carry on bag? I'm moving later this month and don't have a forwarding address set up just yet, otherwise I'd just mail it. Most of my stuff is being packed by the military but I wanted to carry my Micarta 25.
My plan was to disassemble it, tape up the blade and stick it in my shower gear and then wrap up the handle slabs and pack them and the screws in my carry on. Has anyone tried this?

I am guessing that the issue will be with the blade whether disassembled and taped up or not.

I removed the blade from a Leatherman Micra. The TSA agent said the scissors were to dangerous, even though scissors are allowed. He confiscated my 22.00$ Leatherman...I would never try it with a Sebenza.

I have done it and had no issues, I have had knife handle parts in my carry on bag flying to Thailand, USA, Holland and the UK. They were more concerned about my Hinderer pen and keys when they were bothered about anything....

I generally just tape up the knife and put it in my shaving kit bag and check it in. There are times I feel more paranoid about having my check in bag raided than others but I have had no disasters so far....touch wood of course.

I would think handles screwes what have you in carry on bag ok, blade taped up or not no way in carry on. Checked luggage you can keep just the blade taped up and hidden in your clothes pocket if your paranoid. Short of losing your bag you wont have any issues and me knock on wood no issues

This was actually my intention. I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. I would have my shower bag in my checked suitcase so the blade would be checked. The handle slabs and screws would be in my carry on bag.

Haze, that's good to know thank you.

I am moving in a few weeks and have to transfer my whole knife collection (not a huge collection, but significant enough that I am kind of nervous). After thinking about different options, I have decided to photograph each knife, pack them into their original boxes and lock them into a pelican case inside my checked bags. I have renter's insurance, so hopefully I can recoup some funds if some unscrupulous inspector identifies nice knives, but I am still nervous.
I considered mailing them, but the insurance would cost a lot and I should be able to just carry them, right? Does anybody have experience with how safe a locked box in checked baggage is?

I did that before. I was traveling with a UG that I wanted with me, but REALLY didn't want to lose.

I have had a few checked bags come in with the TSA tag after my flight. Basically it says they randomly selected your bag to be screened, they opened it, checked the contents and returned everything back. It also has a disclaimer that they are very sorry but if your bag was locked they may have had to break the lock so they could inspect it.

I do know their "random" selection process got me any time I was carrying something odd like tools or materials for a job so I think a large locked Pelican would attract the Eye of Sauron. Your knives wouldn't be "prohibited" items and should not be confiscated but we all know that goes. With that said, i have never had a knife taken from a checked bag, even one that got the TSA tag, but I have been nervous about it and never had more than one or two at a time.

I almost always get one of those love letters. I inventory my bag carefully each time.

I have had a "notice of bagage inspection" every time I travel back home from the US. I haven't had anything stolen yet, but I always put everything in plastic bags and tape it up super silly like. If they really want what's in that bag they can take the boxers, socks and stinky t-shirts that are in there too. :D

As other said, you can't lock it. I'd read my insurance policy *really* carefully and have a very clear discussion with my insurance agent before I assumed I'd get anything back if they're lost or stolen. Insurance policies are full of unexpected exclusions. Insurance companies are not in business to pay claims, they're in business to collect premiums and *not* pay claims.

Checked luggage is fine as long as what you are trying to bring doesnt overlap to look like "something" or "anything suspicious". Knives they could give a rat. Dont worry. It is 100% legal better than those idiots who mistakenly carry loaded firearms in their carry on because they forgot

I would not trust TSA with anything like that- not even one Sebenza. I travel very often and had lots of issues in the past two years with inspections and those "notice of inspection" cards. I had to make claims with the TSA to be reimbursed for "lost" items and also damaged items. Like others noted there seemed to be nothing random about those checked bag inspections. They are scanned and if anything of interest shows up you are likely to get an inspection.

And I don't think you need to be a US citizen to work for the TSA. So depending where in the US you are flying the local TSA agents may be questionable with regards to ethics and cultural background. After the incidents I had I no longer check bags except for very long trips.

My advice would be to ship FedEx or UPS to a FedEx-Kinkos or UPS store and hold for pickup. That way you have tracking and insurance and peace of mind knowing where those high value items are all the way there. You can contact the hold location and arrange for pick-up if it would be longer than their normal hold (and most of them call you to announce it's availability).

That's actually a good idea. I wasn't sure if they held things if you had no address to mail to. I'll have to call and check on that.

I have always put my Sebenza in my socks and then in my shoes never had a problem. Here is one I heard and may sound funny but I bet it would work. Take a pair of underwear, wrap you knife in them the rub peanut butter on the outside of the underwear. Put all of that in a zip lock bag and in your luggage. I know I would not open it to look if I was inspecting. :-) Just a thought.

This made me laugh. :D

I am definitely getting some good ideas here.
