I recently recieved a great deal (free) 1/2 hp DC Baldor motor from a friend/steelbaron. I want to make a disc grinder that is variable speed and reversible. Can anyone look at this motor and tell me what kind of controller/ vfd that I need to make that happen. Here are the pics and I can provide any other details if needed.

All you need is a dc motor speed control with reversing switch.VFD is for ac.Try surplus center for a control.fleabay has them too.As for a disc get a 9" from midwest knife supply/usaknifesupply.

Keep in mind it is shunt wound. So both the armature and field(s) need to be energized. A standard DC controller does not work like it would with a permanent magnet motor.

That will work if you run it at 220v incoming voltage. That controller is for permanent magnet or shunt wound so your A-OK.Be sure to order the correct resistor and fuse. Also, they sell a reversing/braking switch for an additional 69$.
