I see there’s been some recent threads on disc grinders but didn’t want to hijack them with all my questions...

First, wanting some help on a motor. I know a 1hp is plenty but there’s this 2hp baldor on eBay I’ve seen for awhile. At the same price of a new 1hp 3 phase, would it hurt getting the 2HP baldor? Here’s the two I’ve been looking at:

I also saw in an older thread that someone bought an ironhorse, which seems to be the same as the one on eBay?

I’m wanting to use the same VFD that’s on my belt grinder for this, a KB-27. Would I just need a new switch that could go between belt grinder-off-disc grinder? A link would be great (I’m electronically illiterate). What about making it reversible?

Nothing wrong with using a 2hp as long as your vfd is rated for it. Not to mention you’ll have a backup for your 2x72 if it’s motor goes down.
The main thing is that your shaft dimension will accept the disc. It looks like that baldor is a 56c so that should work with the 9” discs
we usually use. Edit: 5/8” shaft
I can’t help with the kbac drive, I use a teco vfd with a plug and just plug in to whichever grinder I’m using.
Might be able to wire the kbac the same way.
Hopefully someone else will be able to answer that.

I’m planning on getting the Nielsen disc system, which takes a 5/8” shaft so both those motors should be good. That was kind of my thought with the 2HP as well.

Any good way to contact Nielson? Tried sending an email and got error, do they ship to the US?

He does, when I contacted him it was $265 for the hub and $65 a disc and $40 shipping

Can you explain the use of the Hub to me? Seems like the key way and the hole in the disk would already center it to the shaft? Why the extra layer?

His hub is just a disc with magnets inserted for his system

Huh, still confused, could you buy a disc from him without the hub and use it? Or you need both?
The concept is that you can buy multiple thin disks and have a different grit on each one. Then easily switch between the disks as the hub is magnetic.

You guys are legends, I get it now, lol. Pretty cool idea, is it that hard to change paper or people feel it’s a waste to throw paper after 1 part?

I don’t have any experience with it but it seems like it would be much faster to change grits and you wouldn’t have to go through a lot of time/effort to reattach half used sandpaper.

Make sure your motor is rated as TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) I just bought a 1hp brand new engine off Ebay for my disc for 100 bucks. Get some 3M feathering adhesive. It's worth its weight in gold

Will do on the adhesive. Was that a 3 phase motor and with shipping? I haven’t found any new 3phase motors around that price. Unless I’m not looking hard enough...

Heres the motor I bought

Ed caffery has a how to in his website I followed. But BE CAREFUL one of my wires slipped out if the switched and completely fried my vfd
