Disc Grinder Build Assistance

If you do some research on past threads it’s very easy.
There’s probably plenty of people on here that would be able to help out too.

I’ll do some more research on it. I’ve skimmed some, but nothing super in depth. I think I’ll get the 2hp baldor and go from there.

Does anyone know of a wiring kit for disc grinder? I'm building one shortly as well and got the motor, 24d, on off switch, reverse switch, nielson hub, but am struggling to figure out what all I need to get it all connected and up and running. Gotta be some place selling it all in one for wiring it up.

They are pretty simple. Go to your local hardware store and get a piece of flexible conduit and the connectors that attach to the ends. This will be the connection between your motor and VFD. You will also need a power cord. You can buy it by the foot at most hardware stores. The directions in the manual for Kbac VFD's is great and they will answer any questions you have. It's pretty simple. Feel free to ask more specific questions also.

Okay, I got the motor and am buying some screws from mcmastercarr so figured I’d get the switch too. This is what I believe to be the right one to share the VFD that’s on my belt grinder. Could someone verify this?? Both Motors are 2hp 3 phase and the belt grinder is wired for 110v.

You will need a nine terminal switch, three for one motor, three for the second motor, and three for the incoming VFD. I used this one, although twelve terminals, using only the nine.

As Justin mentioned this website, I followed this as well, although I wired the switch in a box instead of the VFD...EZ peasy:

Oh that’s right, I read through Caffrey’s page awhile ago and should’ve known that. I think I’ll go ahead and get that one on amazon, $8 sounds a lot better! Thanks for the link.

Hoping to get the Nielsen hub system next. What grits does everyone use? Trying to decide how many plates to buy.

I’m thinking something along the lines of 80, 120, 220, and 400? 120-400 primarily for flats and bevels, then 80/120 for handle material.

I would go lower for handle material. 6o grit at least, but 40 wouldn't be too low depending on type of material and how much you need to remove.

Yeah I think 60 would work well. I can do heavy removal if needed on the belt grinder then square things up on the disk.

I see there’s been some recent threads on disc grinders but didn’t want to hijack them with all my questions...

First, wanting some help on a motor. I know a 1hp is plenty but there’s this 2hp baldor on eBay I’ve seen for awhile. At the same price of a new 1hp 3 phase, would it hurt getting the 2HP baldor? Here’s the two I’ve been looking at:

I also saw in an older thread that someone bought an ironhorse, which seems to be the same as the one on eBay?

I’m wanting to use the same VFD that’s on my belt grinder for this, a KB-27. Would I just need a new switch that could go between belt grinder-off-disc grinder? A link would be great (I’m electronically illiterate). What about making it reversible?

I'm running 3, 1.5hp baldor motors on one kb-27 VFD with 2 switches one is on the 2"x72" one is on a vertical disk sander with the nelson disk the other is a horizontal disk sander, works great. I think I've got a youtube video of the grinder bench up if you wana check it out its under Bootleg Blades.

Waiting on some caswell finish to arrive. It’s done and the sheath is done but didn’t like the feric/vinegar etch and didn’t like any of the 3 coffee etches sooo caswell is my last try as I’m tired of hand sanding the F-ing thing lol.
