I have been unable to make any knives for over a month due to a Psoriatic arthritis flare up that has my elbows incapacitated at least until the meds give more relief so I have been trying to get some new equipment made for when I get back at it. I came home this evening with a new 1 hp, 3 phase, 1760 rpm Baldor motor waiting for me. I am now looking at the vfd and the 9 inch disc, Do any of you use the 9 inch disc from K&G with the rubber backer? I am trying to build the best grinder first instead of cheaping out and wishing later I would have bought different components. Any feedback or suggestions? Thanks as usual guys.

Craig I just ordered the TG-92 base and disc from trugrit and a motor from automation direct. I'll be using the same vfd from my 2x72. Vfds are expensive so I thought this would be the best route. If you already have a vfd I would look into that. Also check out Rod Neilson's interchangeable discs. I see you are also in WV, me too I'm in Parkersburg

Hey Bartlett, Do you know if a 3hp vfd would be ok for running a 1hp motor? I have other plans for a build and would like to use this vfd for that also, Thanks for the help and maybe we could get together in the future. I am about 20 minutes outside Beckley.

Don't be disappointed ! Look at a Rod Neilsen Hub and discs that has his magnetic set up. His discs are made just for his hub. This is such a simple system to use with no loss of unused sand paper if you get a few discs that will change in about 20 seconds one for another.

I've been told it's ok to use a higher rated vfd but not the other way around. So you couldn't use a 3hp motor on a 2hp vfd. Check the amperage ratings on the vfd and the motor just to be sure

I have my vfd on the way, I am on the last phase now. I emailed Rod Nielson for a quote on his disc system, I hope I can afford the system so I can change disc out instead of wasting paper.

While I thought I would of liked the Nielson system, it was way out of my budget. I've since bought a single aluminum disc from Beaumont and just use 3M feathering adhesive to attach paper discs that I hand cut from 9x11 sheets. I can then change out discs in a matter of seconds and I don't waste any paper as with the 3M adhesive you can re-attach a paper disc if need be. It's really a great solution and I have to thank Nick Wheeler for the info. Watch the video I posted earlier and you'll see Nick using the 3M stuff and just how easy it is.

Edit: Sorry I posted the vid in a different thread. Here it is:

Thanks a lot NC Biker, I will look into the adhesive. I was stationed above you in the late 80's early 90's at Lejeune.

Well the 3M feathering disc cement certainly is the system to use. I'm sure Nick is just showing what he is using and not an idea he has come up with. The disc cutting is certainly all his. Use a 1/8" piece of cork to first cover the disc . The 3M glue can be used here too. It will give you a smoother running surface without affecting metal finish.

We'll, I wasn't suggesting that Nick invented 3M's Disc Adhesive, or discovered it's use in knife making. I was only thanking him for letting me know about it. I use a cork pad on finer grit papers also, but remove it when using coarser paper. Again, a great use of the adhesive, as you can just pull the pad off when not using it and just press it back on when you need it.

I did check out the Nielson disc system but it is out of my budget on this build, I ordered a 9 inch disc from Trugrit and so all pieces will be put together hopefully by the end of the week. I am having my adjustable rest built right down the road from me at a Machine shop, My Father in law has permission to work there as he fixes things for them for free so he is making the rest at little to no cost. I am sure this build will help me out being able to slow down and reverse directions. NC Biker, I have been all over Carolina beech spending free time. Thanks for all the advice and comments.

Craig and anyone else looking to get a disc grinder set up, I thought I show you just how easy it is to swap out paper using the 3M adhesive.

Now that is some quick changing going on there, I will be buying some feathering adhesive and more 9x11 paper this week. Thanks for the tip.
