anyone know where to get a motor and controller that will work for a disc grinder(variable speed, reversible) that is reasonable priced or even used. I have considered purchasing the grinder from Rob but would really like to save some money if possible as it seems like a pretty straight forward machine.

Thanks

John

if you know someon who works at a place that puts in furnaces they might have an old blower motor. you can get a switch to make the motor reversible and variable speed.

Got mine off EBAY. The easiest way is to get a 220v 3ph motor and an inverter that changes 1ph to 3ph and controls the speed as well. You could do it for $100-$200 if you wait long enough and buy good used components. ANother way is to go DC. It seems to be a bit more expensive and harder to find but it will work also. I would recommend at least a 1hp motor. I have both Ac 3-ph and DC. They both work well and use them for everything. The only thing you would need then is the disc and Rob can furnish one of these. Stay away form the light cast alum ones. I prefer a heavy steel disc or even a heavy Alum one will work. Good luck

can anyone provide a link to a controller and motor that would be compatable just as a starting point, as I dont know much about these things?

Thanks
John

Motor I use

VFD 110 to 220 3 phase Not dust proof but, I mount mine high on the wall and run the forward reverse with a switch and the speed with a 10k 5 turn pot. They have a fully enclosed one now for 80 more.

You can get 9" disk from Grizzly also. Look for a machine with the disk size you want and then go to the parts manual. I made a set up that I can change from a shaft with a 9 and a 12" disk to buffers in less than a minute.
