Disc sander pad?

Curious if anyone has tried a 70-80 durometer say 1/16" thick sheet of polyurethane similar to say the poly on a contact wheel to make grinding a flat grind a little more efficient? Love using my disc but miss the softness of using a contact wheel. I can obviously take it off when I want a true flat but what do yall talented folks think? Or has anyone tried flat grinding with a cork or rubber pad?

Thank you kindly

I have a Rod Nielson magnetic disc grinder and I use a 3/32 " cork pad on all of the 6 or 7 discs I use.

Frank, I have the same system on my disc grinder. I think you already know that Rod sells 2 different discs for his system with one of the discs being much thinner than standard to save money. I have two of each type of discs and I honestly cannot tell any difference in performance but the thinner discs let the center hub stick out on the face of the disc and it was suggested that I glue 1/16th cork to the disc for spacing which I did only I put the cork on the back side of the disc so that the face would have a sharp edge to grind to. I haven't tried cork on the face of the disc but I will give it a try as well. Thanks for the idea! Larry

Nick hand a video a while a go that showed him take a blade to 320 I think, then put on a thin rubber pad and go back to the 320. He said he liked the flatness of the hard, but the finish was better on the padded. This is what I remember, it was a year ago or so.

The cork thing was suggested to me when I got my machine. I've tried it without but find it works better for me with the cork. Don't go to a rubber or (?). The results will be very disappointing. I got the cork in a small roll from a car parts supply.
