disc sander?

steven, it sounds like your disc is out of true if your blade bounces all around. you should be able to lay your blade on the disc and not have it jump around. mine is only out maybe half a thou if that. maybe you should try to true yours up a little.

Richard, No mater how true your disc is, there is no way you can lay the blade against a moving disc and not have a tiny bit of chatter. That plus the fact that there is a greatly increased chance of a gouge makes starting the disc with a foot switch once the blade is properly positioned a better way to go.

i dont seem to have a problem with chatter. i can lay my blade up against the disc lightly before laying into it.

I am now on my second washing machine motor. Its mounted on a 2x6 with the shaft pointing straight up and the 2x6 is 3 feet long . On the end away from the motor is a 3/4 inch bolt that is mounted in my bench so that it will swing out where I have a real open working area. I have a tall stool that is perfect for sitting at that level and my legs go on either side of the motor. I have removed the capacitor so that the motor has to be started by hand but can be started in either direction. It has a sears sanding disc that I have attached a 9 inch round aluminum disc to that uses auto body sanding disc that can be purchased anywhere in grits from anywhere from 600 grit to down to ???. I use spray removable contact cement and wet or dry for finer grits and apply the full sheet and use the back side of a hacksaw blade to sheare away the excess. This is the most important and cheapest tool in my shop. I pay $ 5.00 for motors and $10.00 for the plates. To date I have completed and sold over 700 440c knives with these two tools and expect many more years use out of them. Tip: If you are going to grind blades with the edge towards the rotation , radius the outside edge of the disc about 1/8 of an inch. If you dont do this the square edge is going to bite into the knife blade and you will have an unguided missle on your hands. Since there no guards on this kind of equipment always keep items being ground directed away from your body.
