disc vers,horizontal,vers vertcle grinders-who wins

Donn- when i payed for my kmg-i payed for everything, every option i could get- 3hp,vfd,rotory platen, i also bought the small wheel attachments, and the tool rest--i thik it mike adams or --dam--i forgot who i got that from. In reality , in your opinion, a disc grinder is not going to make that much difference in my grinds--is that a correct assumption? Now that i got the bubble jig maybe that can help me out. I Love making knives, i love looking, smelling and shaping wood. im in love with this craft. But maybe im getting too far away from the basics and wrapped up in the techno of it all--mark

I love my 2x72 its the best, I just made a 1.5hp disk grinder, but i made it to do handle scales and things that are meant to sit flat.

Well Mark, you really have no excuse for poor grinds :D

A disc might help. But you can do it on a belt. Just need to learn to feel what the blade is doing on the belt.

Back to basics is right, learn to use what you have. Practice, practice, practice.

Jt - i could do that ( true up scales and blocks on my 6" disc 1x42 delta right. hell when i finish cleaning up the flood damage i could try it myself, but i dont see why not.--thanks marekz

Its funny because after i got my disk grinder done and then talked to richard J on the phone about how i should try flat grinding on a disk i tried it. well to say the least i felt like a total newbie, I mean my grind was flat but i felt like i did not have any control. i guess that's what i like about a 2" wide belt, I can work on sections of a blade at a time or move crest lines where i want them. but i felt totally helpless on the disk. I know if i where to spend a day with it i would be OK but it just funny to get that feeling back after so long of feeling confident at the belt grinder.

ya that would work fine for that as long as your not really hogging material off. To tell you the truth i have never used a 1x42 grinder at all so I'm clueless about there power but i know thy must not be to impressive. but for doing handle scales i think it would be fine.

I am a BIG fan of a disc sander. :)

I "rough out" on the 2X72 and clean things up with the disc. I don't HAVE to use it, but it makes it easier and more consistent for me to get bevels WELL FINISHED. It's more about finish than anything (for me) :)

i can grind a knife faster on my disc compared to a belt sander but i'm using 24 grit. i can grind a 6" blade in about 15 minutes. i still use my belt sander to clean up the lines from the disc and to finish the blade. when i first started out making knives i could have made a lot more knives if i had a disc.
