Hi folks,
I'm new to this game and have just made my second knife but am having a problem with some staining on the wooden handle after sanding, no matter how much I sand it doesn't come out...http://imgur.com/wb2VaZ4
I added epoxy color to my epoxy to fill my file work, do you think this is the problem? The wood is curly maple. What do you think is causing this and how do I fix/prevent it?
Thanks kindly,

You are using Black wet & Dry, You want to use wood working paper that's a light grey or white in color. Norton makes some great stuff.

I use Norton Prosand, It goes up to 400 grit and there is no residue left on wood, bone etc..

After your finished sanding, use a soft pencil eraser and briskly scrub the wood. I made the same mistake before and picked that trick up somewhere around here. Worked like a charm for me, used it just a couple weeks ago on a curly maple handle. Obviously Laurence has a solution to prevent it altogether, but now that your invested give the eraser a try.

Thanks folks, much appreciated! I tried both these suggestions and they worked to an extent but i still have the same issue.
I think whats happening is that as i sand over the pins, the black epoxy is being powdered then forced into the areas of open grain.
I might try oiling the wood then sanding it to see if this stops the black epoxy dust from re-entering. This is such a pain as i have spent countless hours on the knife, this'll teach me to try something fancy like filework and coloured epoxy ;)
wish me luck!

From looking at your picture it appears that you have filled in some file work with a black epoxy?
Those look like Loveless bolts and the blacking in'nt coming from them. Try taping over the spine/file work and gently hand sand with a lite paper or/do the eraser trick that Matt mentioned.

I tried all the suggestions and it did help. It seems however that the epoxy has impregnated the wood quite deeply around the brass pins as you can see here ... http://imgur.com/a/rCuOF
I think I'll put the black coloured epoxy into the file work and finish it before fitting the scales next time. Thanks for all your advice! I learn so much with each one of these I make, albeit mostly through making mistakes :)
