Has anyone seen this new discovery show?(Hogs Gone Wild) It seems most of these people carry around big pig stickers with them. The episode I saw tonight showed a woman in texas sticking a 300lb boar her great dane had at bay. It was some pretty crazy stuff.
I have two questions.
1:Does anyone possibly know what some of the knives were these people were carrying?
2:What knife would you use to kill a wild boar?

Off topic but what's the deal with the Discovery channel these days? They used to have educational shows but now it's nothing but crab fishing, ice road trucking, lumberjacking and now hog sticking. Maybe they should just change it to the Discover Working Class Americans Swearing At Each Other Channel.

Sorry.

Apparently the ESEE Junglas is good for killing boar. I saw it in the ESEE subforum.

I'd use either the new Condor Boar Dagger or a piece of my own design. Sorry, don't have pics of it. :)

An old guy we knew growing up would carry an old bayonet for pig sticking. I don't know the model or country of origin, just that it was long, and old. It worked perfectly for what he needed.

personally, i use a fallkniven S1 as a dispatch blade. i've also found a Fairbairn-Sykes dagger to be a pretty neat sticker.

these days, i prefer to put an arrow into 'em first as i'm sick of stitching up great bloody tusk gashes in dogs.

there's even the Nieto Pig Sticker:

contrary to what some people might believe, you don't need whomping great huge long blades. ~5" is plenty. just gotta stick 'em in the right spot of course.

Hay everyone! You were wondering what knives We use to dispatch hogs with. Well i go into the field with two knives always. The first knife is a Winchester fixed blade. I have had this knife for along time. i don"t know model no. or anything else. It just works. The next is a Citadel model Otary. 8.8" Buffalo bone handle. Both knives are not dagger style , but are hunters. I never go for the heart. This is a bad way to put a hog down. Anytime you bleed out into the cavity you add to the gaminess of the meat. I always go for the throat. this is a clean kill, and the blood exits the body with the help of the heart pumping out clean. Go strait in ,do not go across this is sloppy and not a clean kill. Go across the larynx to catch jugulars and pull strait out. I will only do it this way for a clean kill. By cutting the larynx you stop the ability for the hog to scream which will save the ears.
I have been doing land management for decades , and animal rescue on the big island.I love animals and do not take this lightly. Its part of the removal process. The hogs go to families in need. Never leaving a downed animal in the field. The next show on Sunday i get bit pretty good , But that to is part of the every day work with what i do.
Happy hunting

I liked the show. I have never been hunting hogs and want to go with experiences people. Obviously What they did on the show would be a bit crazier then I would expect for a first time hunt. My favorite thing about the show is the man/dog relationship.

You will like the next show. I went into a cave after the boar. My catchy dog and to bayers. Lots of fun. You can"t have any fear, and total confidence on the dogs. They are showing this episode on Super Bowl Sunday , What a rush to show on the same day!!!!

Discovery is coming up with some excellent shows and this one's darn good watching. I'll DVD the series.

Its a series on hunting hogs for pest control. The episode I saw had two story lines. One in Florida the other in Texas. The Florida one focused on a group of hogs tearing apart a private community. The Texas one focused on a cattle ranch that had the hogs coming in and eating the cattle fed and then scarring the cattle. It was a large ranch and took some different tactics to get the hogs. Oh there was also another guy who built a pen to catch a few he sounded Australian.

There are three teams. I am in Hawaii with my partner Andrew west. The other teams are in Texas and then Florida. There are 10 episodes in season one, that can be extended to 14.
Only if the ratings are high enough. Then we can also get picked up for season 2.

Tobso, when they coralled and restrained the hogs in the pen on the last episode what did they do with them, were they removed to another location to be bled and processed? Hopefully they didn't set them loose.

I think I remember him saying that they would help feed the local community.

I live in Milolii Hawaii. This is the last traditional fishing village in Hawaii. Everyone lives on subsistence . The village does not have power or city water, but we do have phone lines. The hogs are distributed to the families. The hogs are very important to the Hawaiians , they are considered one of the lesser Gods in Hawaiian religion . So they show alot of respect to them. All hogs harvested on the show in Hawaii are donated this way.We can not take the meat to the food banks or kitchens do to the laws in Hawaii. This is something that has to be addressed. We in Hawaii avoid killing on TV so we don"t have PETA down our necks. The animal rights people are already making nasty phone calls. I don"t know how they get our numbers so quick.

Thanks
Tobso

Peta can be nasty but don't let them slow you down. Your show is terrific and you are supporting a good cause in getting food to the table of those who need it.
