I just ran across this and thought one of our brotherhood may fit the bill:

Discovery Channel is currently looking for a wilderness survival expert with military background to be the face of a new show. Candidates must be able to survive in all types of outdoor settings. SERE, special forces, sniper training is a plus.

We ask anyone interested to submit a photo and bio/resume including their age and where they are based. In addition, we would love to see any video that you have of yourself. They can be home videos or a 3-5 minute video made specifically for us explaining background, survival skills, and showing us how you would survive in a specific situation. We want authentic, credible, and outgoing personality to shine through in the video.

Feel free to call or email me with any questions on how to submit materials. We are on a tight deadline, so we need materials within the next day or 2. Also, if you know anyone else who may be interested, feel free to forward this info. along.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hmm 'submit a photo'....Is there anyone here that is pretty????

Where the hell was all this crap when I was a fresh 21 year old recon sergeant just out of the army?

They wait until I'm an old fat man and then they decide to start doing this stuff. Life can really suck.

I could have been somebody, I could have been a contenda.:grumpy::p

I was on you tube the other day and saw that the guy from wilderness outfitters has already gotten a call back. He's a pretty cool guy, definitely ex-military. What's funny is that he says his name at the beginning of each video and yet I still can't remember it. I guess that says something about me doesn't it.

His name is Dave Canterbury and he's an ex-Ranger (Airborne)... he is definitely very comfortable in the wilderness... wouldn't call him a survivalist per say, but then again it all depends on what they're looking for, doesn't it? He's pretty rough-and-tumble... not nearly as flashy or camera ready as someone like Bear Grylls, and not nearly as knowledgable as someone like Les Stroud. If they're looking for someone with the knowledge to survive in many different settings, they'll probably have to go with someone else... though, that show has been done a few times already, hasn't it?

Not trying to diss our military members, but what exactly does military experience have to do with it? Why is it a requirement? Is that just to appeal to the public?

The military in general trains you that the cause, the mission, is more important than your life. It's not the actual fact, but the mindset, that makes a difference. Also, the types of specialties they are looking for live and die by their bushcraft techniques and abilities and have lots of real world practice and accumulated knowledge from their teammates about not only survival, but surviving while trying to evade and escape.

I'm not pretty, and I have no military background, but if they hired me, I could help their film crew get spectacular footage. :D

Perhaps our moderator, Brian Jones, would be a good candidate. I'll send him a link to this discussion.

The fact that they're looking for someone with military background in spec ops, or a sniper worries me. no disrespect to service members, I just fear they're going for another Xtreme survival show, with a host to the tune of that "future weapons" twat. Anyways, good luck to anybody that applies, it would be amazing to have somone on this forum do that.

Survival isn't tacticool weapons that manufacturers pay you to sell on discovery channel-survival is life and death. For those of you who aren't military and haven't been through this stuff, it's understandable not to know why they ask for these prerequisites, but even on the WSS forums here we tend to confuse bushcraft and outdoor recreation with survival.

The reason they want military experience, is because they are more credible to the general public. "If they were in the military, they must know what they are doing" mentality. Kinda like how people think it's ok for the police to carry a gun, but not for a citizen, even if in fact the citizen has more training and experience with guns.

It's for the sheeple...

I remember Rudy from Survivor season 1 admitting they actually did very little surivial training and more escape in hostile territory type training. He actually did not know very muc. This echo's my own military survival experience some but not much.

Unfortunately in order to survive you have to have abs. Without killer abs you really don't stand a chance in the wilderness. I made the mistake of storing a few thousand calories of emergency food supply over mine. Mac

HA! I guess I'm out of the running, too...

Abs? I know I had some about 40 years ago. Hmmm ... now where did I put those. If I can only find them, I'm a prime candidate. I know they're around here somewhere ...

I just spent a few days periodically chatting with Dave Canterbury from Pathfinder. I liked the fact that he is a no-nonsense guy. Also liked his emphasis on blue-collar priced gear rather than the high-end Pataguccia type stuff (although I must admit to having bought both).

I would say that many people misunderstand what being in the military means. They assume that everyone, whether you are in the army, navy, marines or air force are all trained to the same level and are all trained in combat. Yes, everyone is trained at some minimal level of competence in military tradition and competence with a basic combat weapon, meaning they typically know what end they need to point downrange and how to make it go bang – at least until the magazine runs out of the bang thingies. I spent 3 years in an infantry battalion perfecting my art as an armored reconnaissance specialist, also known as a cavalry scout and taking all training and every school that I could go to. Forty men in a battalion of 750 to be the eyes and ears for the battalion. I eventually became a sergeant in charge of my own squad. When I was in, we use to spend a week in the barracks and two weeks in the field. Then back for a couple of weeks and then out again for another week or two. All year, every year, winter, summer, fall and spring. And for us in the infantry living in the field was the real deal. Almost always tactical and training was done so that it was second nature. Now comparing me to a sergeant in an air defense artillery unit or even a marine who was a lieutenant in a clerks office is not exactly comparing apples to apples. Our job was sneak, peek and evasion since reconnaissance is useless if the enemy knows you have it. How many civilians get to do that level and amount of training and be taught by people at that skill level?

Now I’m not saying that some non-military people couldn’t have been as good or even better than we were and couldn’t certainly be better than 90% of most of the military. I agree with you that the general perception that everyone in the military is automatically a skilled warrior or even a skilled outdoors man is totally wrong but, the ones that are, can possess considerable talent in the field.
