As has been previously mentioned my thoughts on the military experience thing is to do with marketing. To the uninformed someone who has done any kind of specialist training in the military is instantly on the same level as Les Stroud or Rambo. You only have to look at how many outdoor equipment companies or knife companies take great care to mention their military connections. Pure PR.
I know for a fact that the type of bushcraft discussed here and even things like a decent knowledge about knives is a rare thing in the modern military. Having been either a marine reserve or marine for the last 13 years i've seen first hand how the general marine tackles a survival situation. I'll be honest it is not with finesse or an attitude of working with the environment. It's mainly about surviving to fight and getting back to your unit. Relying heavily on existing fitness, kit and a fighting spirit to get you through it.
I will say there are rare exceptions but they are exactly that rare and exceptions to the general body of men.
I'll be interested as to how this comes out but to be honest most survival shows seem to now be pumping a dry well in terms of new ideas.
