I was told by someone at a knife store that dishwashers can ruin the temper of knives. It seems like most steels are tempered at a fairly high temperature (600 -1400 F).

Is it possible for a dishwasher to 'ruin' a knife's temper?

thanks

In a word, no. It may cause rust on the knife though!

one of the lowest tempers on steel is on 440C, at about 400 degrees....but a dishwasher dryer wont affect it...what will affect your knife is the dishwasher SOAP and the hot water....rustomatic! dont do it.

I won't let my dishwasher touch my knives, she either gets cut or uses them for kitchen chores..lol.

Dishwashers can ruin some plastic handles, and Definitely destroy some natural wood handles, but it won't hurt the temper.

The banging around from the water action will definitely dull the blades though.

Dishwashers destroy the temper of the OWNERS of knives once they come out half dissolved and spotted and nicked.
