All,

Does anyone know where to purchase a 9" flat grinder disk fitted for a 7/8" motor shaft?

I have a 2 hp variable speed motor with controller wired-up and ready to use. I have been planning to purchase a disk grinder but the problem is that this motor frame size is a 143 rather than a 56. The bolt pattern for the "c-face" is the same for 143 and 56 motor frames, but the shafts are different diameters. I have only been able to find grinder disks which are ready to accept a 5/8" shaft with a 3/16" keyway. My motor has a 7/8" shaft with a 3/16" keyway. I have access to machine shops but would prefer not to spend the money to have the disk bored and re-broached for the key.

I contacted one of the major knife making disk grinder suppliers, and was informed that they only sell them ready for a 5/8" motor shaft.

Thanks,

I am pretty well set up with electric motors . . well not entirely, since I don't have one to fit commercially available disk grinders. I also have a spare 2 hp AC Leeson totally enclosed drip-proof motor with a 56c frame but it is not ready for variable speed capability.

I really want to fit a disk onto this $1500+ variable speed DC brushless motor that picked up for under $250 with controller.

Mike, if you look in the classifieds, I think at one point Nathan The Machinist was making discs in both 5/8 and 7/8.

I will contact Nathan, I bet he'd be able to do 7/8" too. Thanks for the lead.

Nathan would be the best bet here. You will not be sorry for using the 7/8 shaft. Mine is and the stability is great. I also have a 56 with the 5/8. It works good too but the 7/8 is my workhorse. Use it more than the 2x72.

Mike, I tried to reply to your email but it bounced back. Nothing private, so I'll post here

Mike,

I'm sorry but that was a one time run of 5/8" and 3/4" so adding a 7/8" to the mix isn't possible at this time. I'd offer to modify one for you but the bore and the face have to be cut at the same time in the same setup to eliminate any runout and now that they are beveled on the back there is nothing to hold onto to make that cut. (the stub isn't good enough, the face is hardened steel)

I don't recommend any adapters for this, you'll get wobble.

Sorry I couldn't help you.

Nathan

I bought a Nathan disc and had my 7/8 shaft turned down to 5/8. Cost me 75.00 Jess
