I Will be mounting a few knives on the doors, I'm out of room and still have 4 or 5 that I want to add. With my case I still have over 2" of clearance with the door closed and the ones I have mounted are under 1" from the back.
My Wife found this case at a thrift store and I think it works well. I did replace the hinges and added a extra one on each side to help with the extra weight. The doors are solid wood so I think it will work fine.

I'm kind of apprehensive about magnets living in an earthquake prone zone so I'll probably end with some kind of hook system going through the rivets or the holes. so that should allow the knives to be mounted closer the back.
My idea was to get a wall mounted jewelry display ordered of etsy, which is basically what you have there. Then, I would finagle some sort of hock attachment system. my concern in planning is making sure it kind of still looks like picture frame instead of a wall mounted cabinet. But I would love 3 display panels that would close shut.
