disstow porter files (steel type?)

I have a large file marked in all caps DISSTOW PORTER at the handle right above a hole .

17.25 "from tip to bottom and 1.25" wide x .25"

Dose any know if it is 1095 ??

"spring steel " - that could mean almost anything !

For sure a good file is not made from reconstituted stainless knife blades.

Do the spark test on it.

Grind off a couple mm and see if the sparks stay the same or if they start shooting out farther. That will tell you if case hardened or high carbon.

thanks i have move in another direction . i have some 1080+ bar steel coming to the house right now . this way i know what i have and no annealing to so .
