I think there are numerous threads talking about how the British islanders cannot carry anything that might be construed as an offensive or defensive weapon. I'm Bettin' no. Shoes are still leagal, and belts, too.
Also, you European friends might try something that works in the US sometimes regarding weapon/tool carrying (blades, not guns). If you get stopped/pulled over by law enforcement, and someone notes that you have a sword/khuk/axe, fencing foil, etc in your vehicle, just tell then you are a collector of such things. Then (in the officer's mind) it transforms the piece into a work of art, or a wall decoration, and it isn't seen as a weapon. (this tactic works best if you've done nothing wrong in the first place, or if the item is sheathed and such.
I live in the midwest, where such things are thot to be interesting, and not considered dangerous. Hovever, just about every male (and 50% of females) in Indiana, even Indianapolis carries a knife of some sort. Just the rural roots coming thru, I guess. Still looked at as a tool.
