I don't know if anyone has experienced the same but when I got my first khuk BAS I thought it was huge - now when I compare it to my others it seems small. Weird

Yep. :)

Any knife under 15" is small now. I used to carry a CS tanto while on hiking trips thinking it was rather large. :)

Yep, that's how it goes.
I've been handling swords and axes for a while, and I had a pretty good prespective on things. Then I noted the spine thinckness of the khuks. compared to my collection, ony a few other 'weaponized' knives that I have are even close to that thick! Kris Cutlery Tanto and Naginata blade, perhaps a few axe blades.

Now an 18" 2lb khuk looks normal to me, and my Buck Crosslock looks like a pen knife!

Relativity at work, 24/7...

Brendan, does England allow you to carry your khukuris in the country?

Absolutely not, Im friendly with a few cops and firemen and they say that Im allowed to own it as a collector only not even take it out the house - unless Im taking it to an event where I need it. If I use it in defence I probably go to jail !!

Crap hey !

I think there are numerous threads talking about how the British islanders cannot carry anything that might be construed as an offensive or defensive weapon. I'm Bettin' no. Shoes are still leagal, and belts, too.

Also, you European friends might try something that works in the US sometimes regarding weapon/tool carrying (blades, not guns). If you get stopped/pulled over by law enforcement, and someone notes that you have a sword/khuk/axe, fencing foil, etc in your vehicle, just tell then you are a collector of such things. Then (in the officer's mind) it transforms the piece into a work of art, or a wall decoration, and it isn't seen as a weapon. (this tactic works best if you've done nothing wrong in the first place, or if the item is sheathed and such.

I live in the midwest, where such things are thot to be interesting, and not considered dangerous. Hovever, just about every male (and 50% of females) in Indiana, even Indianapolis carries a knife of some sort. Just the rural roots coming thru, I guess. Still looked at as a tool.

Use one of those little things to cut a steak with and the sheeple will still treat you as an alien for having a weapon.

It's like fear of snakes. Not susceptible to reason.

Brendan you're absolutely right!:D

I'll go one better than that--khuks have such distorting power that my wife say the new BG villager(14") that I just got and said

"Oooh its so cute--I love the tiny ones":D

There is difference between irrational fear of snakes and of guns. I know I'm hard wired afraid of snakes. I understand this and use judgement instead of emotion. That is too much to ask of those afraid of guns.

This is funny.

The 15" Durba Siru that SS40 donated was waiting for me when I arrived home for the week. My initial reaction was "that's tiny". Then I remembered that it was, after all, a 15" knife and that my larger khuks had altered my perceptions. At least I'm not the only one.

Point taken, munk. I'm same way with snakes. ( You, me, and Indiana Jones. ) Gotta get me a new Indy fedora. Mine finally fell apart after 20+ years.

Yep,

The first khuk I ordered was a 12' AK. Compared to my Fallkniven knives, it was big. If the handle had not been too small, I probably would not have looked further that soon.

Then the AK 15' came. Big Chopper. THen the 16.5' Chiruwa AK. Last week the latest one arrived - the Kumar Villager at about 17', field report pending. Do one see a pattern here?

Khukuris make you understand relativity theory. I still would take the 15' AK with me though - it's my favorite user khuk.

Alright, I'll admit it. The BAS was the first, and after cutting with it I realized it needed to be bigger. A lot bigger.

Short of The Crocodile Hunter, most of us have a natural and healthy fear of critters than can end our lives with a single bite. It irks me a rattlesnake acting out of stimulus response could end the life of one of my son's. I'm not too fond of spiders that chase you down the hallway, either, as that Australian number can do.

...except now theyre checkin them for c4!

sorry - crass joke to make before americans.

In civvy street I only feel happy carrying my little 15"AK hiking/ camping, where i can convince any authorities that i'm not carrying it as anoffensive weapon. Even then i'll not have it on my belt, but in my pack.

Having used the ak quite a bit now, i think i can see the merit of larger ones. Someone suggested i don't start at anything less than 18.5"!

...but at the moment its not longer than the army issue machete: seems more subtle to me (in some funny way).
