Ditch a knife outside the airport terminal. OK, my wife did anyways....

I was at the airport in Cincinnati to watch a friend leave several years ago. I forgot that I had my knife, so I put it in a planter. It was 2:00am and we were the only people there. I guess someone saw it on camera. I thought it would be safe, but it was gone when I came back. It was only about an hour. Kiss one serrated Delica goodbye.

I'm glad you were able to get your BM back. That loss would've hurt!

I'm an Appraiser, and often have to go into public Government buildings. I forgot to take a small Buck that had been engraved and presented to me for being in a wedding out of my pocket at one particular podunk courthouse here in central Michigan. The two dickheads working security were adamant that I return to my vehicle, and secure my "weapon."
It was quite a stroll back to my car, so I walked out the glass doors and set it off to the side of the entrance by some rocks, semi hidden unless someone was looking for it, and walked back inside. I had done this before at different courthouses with no problems. They were like "Sir, we can't be responsible if something happens to that knife." And I replied, "I'm only here to pick up a couple copies that are waiting for me, probably less than 5 minutes," and walked past them.

I did what I had to do, walked outside, and sure as shit, the knife was gone. As I look back inside, these two assholes are smirking at me. I walked back, and said, "That knife was an engraved present. Is there any chance you guys know what happened to it?"
"Nope. We told you we couldn't be responsible if something happened to it." I told them thanks with an extended finger, and hope they cut themselves with it. Amazing how a little authority can turn some into true pricks.

we were going to see the staue of liberty a few years ago with the family and my dad a fellow knife nut had a small spyderco on him and this huge black man working the security booths screams like a 10 year old girl KNIFE! KNIFE! KNIFEEEE! the cop walks over and says im gonna have to confiscate that and destroy it. aka confiscate and deposit in his pocket. it was only a 50 dollar knife but it was still a bummer. but to the op my moms side of he family lives in indiana and we saw something that surprised me and made me smile. while at the jewelry store in indiana in a small mall looking for a present for my cousin, we picked something out and the manager used his swiss army knife's scissors to cut a tag or something off, i was quite happy to see knife owners use it safely and responsibly in public places.

Did you know that all the knives and other items confiscated by the TSA get resold? They get sold on eBay or sometimes locally, do an online search for your State.

they did that with pocketknives the counselors confiscated at a boy scout camp i went to. but im not really surprised, i believe i heard that before also.

Not knives, but the KY Surplus Property agency gets all the TSA confiscated stuff from Louisville & Lexington to resell on eBay. They always have dozens and dozens of the little souvineer baseball bats from the Louisville Slugger Factory/musuem in Louisville. and I mean Dozens and Dozens, sell in lots of 10. Most of the knives confiscated and sold are worn out junk. The good ones are disposed of, uh, internally I suspect.

I was transiting Tokyo-Narita in '98, and I had a SOG Stingray in my day planner. It was OK leaving Seoul, but the Japanese didn't like that I still had it with me. They put it in an envelope and had the aircrew hold it until we landed on Guam. And last year, going to a courthouse in PA, I opted to leave my Leatherman in the truck but had my Res-Q-Me on my key ring. The guard looked at it funny and asked what it was. I found it sad that an officer didn't know.

After reading this. I thought - Would it not be a great idea to place FedEx or UPS self service stands near the checkpoints? So people could use the mailer envelopes to send any items to their home address vs having items confiscated?
Great story! Your wife kept her cool indeed!

I believe SeaTac has those as well. Its a USPS mailbox and some mailing envelopes right at the entrance to the checkpoint.
