I saw a thread on the Whitney Portal forum a few years ago where someone put a personalized marker in the bedrock on their property. I loved the idea, so earlier this year I ordered a custom bronze marker from Berntsen (these are the real thing, just like the USGS or Geodetic Survey markers you see in the mountains):
I don't have any bedrock in my yard, unfortunately, so I had to choose an appropriate rock. I figured the best choice would be a rock from where we go family camping every year, on the Mokelumne River just below Salt Springs Reservoir. We have gone there every year since 1992, and I associate a lot of fond memories with that location. So this year I picked up a large chunk of granodiorite there. Today I went to work with a hammer drill - man is this stuff tough! The hammer drill goes through concrete like a hot knife through butter, but this granodiorite took a lot of work. I have a new respect for the old stonemasons who worked granite by hand. Here is the rock with the hole finished:
Then I put some quick-set cement in the hole, tapped the marker in, cleaned it up, and put it by my front door:
Now I feel a lot better.
