That's what I was thinking this thread was going to be. Still..it is a cool trick to know. Pre-make some one-ended fatwood "q-tips" and it would save on the knife edge and time....another thing to add a few of to a fire kit.

I grew up around cotton. Not cotton balls, but cotton bales. As in many tons of cotton planted, cultivated and harvested every year. I know very well how flammable it is in it's raw state. In fact, you can wrap a hot coal in cotton, enclose it in a small container and take it with you to start your next fire. A glowing ember can last for weeks inside of a compressed cotton bale (500#+/-), and there is very little that you can do to extinguish it.

It is a good way to overcome the scattering of your tender.

By the way guys, although the information can be found online, please don't be tempted to try making your own matches. It is dangerous as hell and not worth the risk, even for the "wow" factor. We played with some of those chemicals in chemistry class (under professor supervision). The prof burned off his eyebrows and the floor "snapped, crackled and popped" for some time.

Now that said, anyone willing to try the fatwood match with some other natural tender wrapped instead of cotton?
