DIY file guide befuddlement...

I don't think you get how these work. Can you please post some pics of your completed knives, so we can see what level of experience you are at? You have been giving a lot of advice, and much of it has been inconsistent with what many of us know and do.

The one I built years ago used blade clamp like a Lansky sharpener, which only worked for certain blade shapes. I already apologized for misunderstanding the way this one clamps, in part because of your post about keeping the plate parallel - I don't see how that is even a concern when you're clamping across the tang.

And I'm not doing the penis measuring thing with you or anyone else. I've posted pictures of knives I've made before, and I'm not going to submit to your resume needs any more than you are. Your referenceless assertions that I don't know what I'm talking about are just trolling.

Shamu I'm glad you got some good info and advice here.

Nobody is trolling you. You were giving bad advice on a subject that you have no practical experience with.

File guides like the one Shamu was asking about, can be used for many different things. They can be clamped perpendicular to the ricasso, and act as a stop when using a file or grinder to create bevels. When the two bars are parallel, this ensures that the plunges are even on both sides.

When the bars of a file guide are parallel it also ensures that the shoulders of a hidden tang are even when you file them in.

Willie is and has been trolling me on a variety of subjects, many of which are not "right or wrong".

I've apologized twice already for misunderstanding the format of this type of filing jig and appreciate the correction.

I'm not trolling you. You have posted incorrect information on heat treating 52100, hitachi white Sam Mai, relative toughness of 3v, and didn't recognize one of the most common and frequently used tools in knife making. This leads me to believe, possibly incorrectly, that you don't actually make knives, but read about it a fair bit. I don't see how anyone who has made knifes could misunderstand what the tool being made in this thread is. Anyone trying to get even plunge lines knows what this tool is.

I'm no expert on knifemaking. I'm intermediate skill level at best. However, the great makers who used to post here don't come around much any more. There are a lot of new guys who come looking for help, and with all the misinformation on YouTube, and even the lack of showing all the steps on forged in fire, we are constantly correcting misinformation. A few of us with some knowledge try to make this a great place for new people to come and learn. It's clear you have some information, but you are confused on a lot of the process from what I can tell. We want everyone to feel welcome, and I want you to feel welcome too. However, some people do show up here and misrepresent themselves. That's why we ask for you to show your work. It helps us know how much credibility you have. It's not penis measuring. My hunter and Bowie didn't get a single vote in those two threads. I would be repeatedly humiliated if I was "competing" with the people who post here. I've only got about 200 knives under my belt. I'm still a newbie.

This is patently ridiculous. What I posted about 3V you couldn't counter with any factual information. This type of file guide, and file guides in general, having NOTHING to do with knife making experience, just experience with using this specific jig. It is certainly not the only type:

I'm not sure why you believe that there is a single set of knifemaking knowledge and methodology that we all work our way through, but that isn't the way it works. I used a very different file guide once, and got a mistaken impression based on my ACTUAL EXPERIENCE that caused me to mistakenly answer the OPs question. It isn't because I read something once, but because I did it in a very different way.

As far as the other things you've disagreed with me about, you have offered no references to support your claims, and just keep going after me rather than simply demonstrating your point. This makes me completely distrust your intentions to educate or share information. Instead, you sound like an elitist that is trying to quash any discussion that is outside your admittedly limited experience.

I have made maybe 20 knives both by forging, forge welding and stock removal. There is no picture I can post that is going to demonstrate anything at all except whether I can grind steel accurately - which I can, without a jig or guide. But it won't show you how I did it, what heat treating method I used or how the steel came out. So your request for photos just comes off as snobbery.

I post on forums because it is educational to discuss things. And there are all sorts of things that aren't going to be discussed unless someone who isn't a professional decides to bring it up. You appear to be against that.

You think those filing jigs look like what the OP posted? Ok then. I can't wrap my head around that.

The request for photos is a recurring one here. I'm just the person who asked this time.

I didn't post references to the heat treat info because it's all in the stickies for anyone who wants to look. Some of my testing is listed in there, including massive failures that proved what doesn't work. (52100 comes to mind) There's a lot of the discussions with people far more knowledgeable than me that is consistent with what I've posted.

I'm sorry you feel attacked. When I'm challenged, I listen to those who know more than me. If it's not making sense, I do my own testing. Every time I questioned those with more experience, my testing showed they were right. Funny how that worked. :o

I am going to step in as moderator here. My appologies to Shamu for his thread getting derailed.

You have been here 10 years., made 2300 posts ... and 20 knives. I can't find a single post where you show any work.

Willie has a point. You have posted 2300 posts, mostly about factory knives and techniques you "read/heard about". I think you would have more credibility if you had made 2300 knives and made 20 posts. Many of your posts are not germain to the topic, are midleading, or are just plain wrong.

Everyone is welcome here, but if you make inaccurate posts or suggestions, expect to be called on them. I would suggest you sit back and read more, and go make some knives.

What I did see in my checking is lots of argumentitive posts about being trolled or picked on.

You are attacking. This is one of your first posts to me, about steel comparisons, no less:
Do things your own way then. Stop asking questions if you think you know the answers.

If you hadn't been so rude and dismissive from the get-go, I might have gotten a different impression of you. As it stands, your behavior has just been of the same character.

A mod has stepped in on this discussion. It's not my place to continue with this.

Just go away already. This thread isn't for you to whine and argue with people. It's about a file guide. Communicate via PM or email if you need to hash something out with people.

Shamu, I am going to close this thread. If you have any other info needed, feel free to start a new one of PM/email me and I will try and help you or connect you with someone else to help.

To the others, lets let it go. Anyone with a concern about the quality of info posted is best to communivcate by PM or email. If you have concerns about a post, you can always report the thread or contact me or another mod.

RX-79G - Let it go. You can't win this one.

Thread Closed.
