DIY surface belt grinder

I promise , if I need to drill and tap one more hole in this thing ............it will end in scrap yard !!
I had to move the handle so I can use holes for handle / I tap M10 thread there / for adjusting angle on chuck .........

Last update .....................I hope !
I solve heating problem , Al plate are 10mm. thick , magnets are also 10mm so i needed little clearance and used that Micarta to add thickness......I honestly didn't even think about the temperature then. That micarta there was an insulator for heat... So I make new part/2.5mm thick/ from hardened steel ,48-50 Hrc. Drilling all that 27 holes was not fun at all , especially because I had to use 10mm drill bit directly through the Al plate holes to keep them aligned ...Now I have 45 mm thick metal under blade so heat can pass down...........
I also made an accessory so I can taper tang or blade , simple solution .I think it should work nice .............Unlock chuck , turn that two screw to lift chuck from that side ,lock nuts on them to fix them and grind that taper .....
new steel plate to replace Micarta one

Nice thread as usual.. I don't know much about the art of grinders, but I do know you do beautiful grinds!

I forget one more thing ,since drive wheel is contact wheel , I can also use real grinding stone instead of belts ..............

Dude, this is excellent! I've been thinking of doing something very similar to this. Thanks for the ideas.

This is an awesome build, thank you for posting it. Enjoyed your comments quite a bit as well. Losing parts that were literally in my hands 30 seconds ago is my forte. I honestly believe there is a dimensional black hole somewhere that all my lost items fall into. Would answer so many questions as to how. My kids tell me that I need to Velcro parts and tools to my leather apron to prevent loss. Not a bad thought lol.

Thanks !
I found them :D I drove them in my car all the time. I probably put them there when I got them and forgot about them!

Well , this is BS !! So much work to make this **** chuck and I don t like end result !! I install 23 magnets and be my guest to remove steel from them .I put thin G10 over magnets to avoid scratches on Al but 23 x 4.8 kg is 110 kg !! Even If I remove half magnets it is hard to pull steel from Chuck ! I don t know which square magnets you use and how much strong they are and how they work for you but i will remove this **** chuck and install real magnet chuck.I can t imagine how I would use shims with this one ................????

Now I am glad that I made this tool this way. Long stroke has some .....advantages .Who says this tool is for steel only ? Why not wood ? I posted some picture in shop talk , but here is some picture again.First i grinded this two pair scales , I used double tape glued on steel to hold wood and it worked nice .Today I try to square this walnut .I didn t used double tape ,just that two piece of steel are holding wood like vise ,no problem it works perfect .Then an idea came to me , why not to make WA handle on this thing ??? I have great idea how to make a jig for grinding Wa handle on this surface grinder .Parallel, tapered , six corners , eight corners as much I like them . If I have time I will make that jig tomorrow, it's easy .One more thing , this surface grinder has 32 m / s belt speed , for grinding wood I used 80 grit belt .You have no idea how fast it grind wood and no overheated wood or belt contamination .That belt would last long time there . Same with steel , 100 grit ceramic work just fine on steel on that speed and i have filing that belt will last forever..........

Walnut........I have unlimited source from my friend furniture factory .Some pieces are not good for legs on chair but they are good for handle on knife , plus it is heat treated walnut wood and that make it prefect for handles .
I get them like this , some are just tapered some are finished legs but not good for chair so i need to grind them flat

And if you ever see in future some new knife made by me without distal taper tang ban me for life !
This blank is from mild steel , just a copy/template for the second knife I work on. My first distal taper on this grinder and I like it very much , it is amazing how much weight remove from tang ....
I didn’t thin it too much in the end, this is just the first try . . . practice
