So as title states ..I just purchased a ZT 0450 CF...I'm wondering if I need to take any extra precautions as to protect the DLC coating on the blade when using the Edge Pro. Any suggestions? I'll probably just take the extra time to coat everything but the bevel with masking tape ?..

Yup; the blue stuff or others here have used electrical tape.

Good idea to put fresh tape on the EP and to wipe it clean often just to be on the safe side.

DLC is very hard but I find sharpening stone grit can easily scratch it because the grit acts like a bulldozer digging in and moving a quantity of steel with a relatively thin layer of DLC going along for the ride.

I knew it ..now I've got to look up a fast and efficient way to coat my blade (minus the bevel) with masking tape ..lol

Yep. Masking tape for the win. The first knife I ever sharpened on my EP was an Al Mar Sere with a coated blade. Didn't necessarily scratch the coating, but it did leave pesky little rub marks all over the blade; they don't go away either. Just remember: skill before speed. My EP and I have a love-hate relationship.

Good luck OP!

Aaahhh my OCD would be killing me if that were to happen. Sadly I know all too well with the saying "skill before speed" thanks to my M390 PM2 ..that steel is a bitch to sharpen but very very gratifying once you get the bevel you desire. [emoji106]

Good tips guys thank you!

I'd go with painter's tape. I tried electrical tape, and it generally works, but is more prone to leaving residue.

i haven't covered any of my dlc knives while sharpening, I just use a lansky, and don't remember marring the coating. What am I missing here? is this mainly for safe queens or extremely nice knives?

Well..I'd just rather not have my freshly coated DLC blade accumulate scratches from sharpening on the Edge Pro system. Plus I'm a little bit of a perfectionist when it comes to technical aspects.

Blue painter's tape is what I use. It's a bit inconvenient, so I don't bother with kitchen knives and edcs., but I did with my ZT.

Oh dear.... Although guilty of this thinking long ago, I am SO relieved that it wore off me! Keeping them CLEAN and in GOOD SHAPE is a wonderful habit. But I have watched over the years, as this "sickness" overcomes people. I have a good mfriend who is among the worst stricken! I speak of course, of this condition in which a person sees his TOOLS as some type of gemstone jewlary, which must be kept without blemish, and a scratch in the coating will render it useless! Because after all, these are fashion accessories! LOL!

Seriously, TOOLS are just that people! My knives, my guns.... They are tools which are DESIGNED to function despite harsh environments. I don't "tape" my knives up while sharpening, just as I don't tape my guns up when cleaning or maintaining. Losing the lust for SCRATCH-aphobia, was liberating!

I just saw a youtube video of a guy giving a few EdgePro tips, and he suggested clear packing tape for both the blades and the table.

I'm in the "tape em' up" camp. If a blade is completely gouged up because it's a heavy user, no worries, treat it any way you want. But if I have a blade in a certain condition, I'd rather not add the wear and tear (visually) to it from simple maintenance like sharpening. I've had the best luck with basic blue painters tape. Stays on just long enough for the task at hand, and does not leave too much adhesive behind. If the application is meant to be more permanent (like for the EP base), then I might consider something else, like packing tape.

I've had plenty of times in the past where I was either in a hurry, or just thought I was a pro, so no need for the extra work. Heck, I'm experienced now, so I can just "be careful" with the grit and blade appearance. Let's just say I've had to mentally smack myself a few times. :)

I also subscribe to the tape theory, however, I like gaffer's tape. Extremely minimal residue, very tough tape, and fairly "slippery surface" tape.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this "sickness" as David calls it lol. I understand knifes are tools trust me on that one I have a friend that I sold a VG10 Delica to and he won't even use the damn thing because I put a Mirror finish on the bevel and he likes it to much ..it infuriates me lol. So if I scratch my DLC via actual WORK so be it. But when I'm sharpening/maintaining something that I think is a product of my own workmanship I would it to look as pristine as possible, don't you?

to be honest, it seems like overkill, I've never scarred a blade or finish with sharpening. I mean are you guys really uncoordinated? Asking this kinda joking around, but how are you guys messing up a blade finish while sharpening? I'm not slamming anyone so I apologize if I'm coming off that way, we all have our methods. I'm just curious I guess.

I'm not saying it's happened before but hey I'd rather be prepared for the worst if anything does is my philosophy with anything really..plus I guess it's just proper etiquette especially when sharpening other knives than your own? (I've shaprnened many knives for my friends who have DLC coating and was just needing input on what people think works best)

Aquaholicc Aquaholicc I got ya, nothing wrong with being prepared. I sharpen for a few friends and haven't heard any comments about marks and I continue to sharpen for them so I guess it's all good. That being said their knives tend to be in rough shape when I get em so they probably wouldn't notice either way. I appreciate your responses! have a good one!

How do you sharpen? On the EP, setting the blade on the "blade table", which can get debris on it during sharpening, can scratch the blade if/when it's moved across. Pretty common actually.

(Just not sure you noticed that this was sharpening using the EP).

cbwx34 cbwx34 I'm well aware of what this thread is about.

Haha... ok... just wasn't sure. Like you said in you other post... blades in "rough shape" or well used... you won't see this. On new blades, it can be easy to spot. Some people care (a lot)... so if sharpening for others... may be something to pay attention to. :)

(If you use the EP... surprised you never seen this).
