DMT Aligner Stones in KME?

I already owned a DMT Aligner when I got my KME. I just use the DMT holder and rod with the KME clamp - works fine.

Haha... yeah that'll work, never overlook the obvious. :)

Just be aware there's about a 5° difference... not necessarily a big deal, but just FYI... you might need an alternate way to set/check angles.

p.s. (Like your avatar 2manyknives).

sorry for the confusion I meant why choose the DMT plates over the KME plates? Are they better in some way or just preference?

Well that's just too easy, lol. How close is the DMT holder's rod diameter to the KME holder's rod diameter?

I also own the DMT but this wouldn't work for me because I simply don't like the DMT stone holder, that's one reason I'm looking for a new system.

My guess would be: cost, availability, and a slightly larger stone. Not sure if there's a performance difference... haven't compared them.

Oh I see. Just in my experience the gold series plates are very high quality and work exceptionally well. 25$ isn't a bad price for them either.

I'm pretty sure that what I showed in that picture will work (played around with it again this a.m.)... plus it lines up with the other stones, so you could interchange if needed without any angle change.

Edit to add: Just to check, I sharpened a kitchen paring knife with the Aligner stones... no problem.

I have heard they are the best diamond stones on the market. Mine are almost a year and a half old and still cut super steels like elmax and cts 204. I have done some MAJOR reprofile jobs and they are still good

My reasoning is the variety of grits DMT offers and their ready availability on Amazon Prime, but the KME plates aren't bad on price. Plus, there's also the fact that KME offers glass plates, so I can get almost any grit I want in the form of silicon carbide and aluminum oxide 1" wide sanding belts.

My confusion stems from the fact that DMT makes the aligner stones that are 2 3/8 in long and the continuous diamond hones that are 5 in long that will work with the KME system, actually KME actually sells them as well.

My KME was delivered today. The piece that the knob threads onto on the stone holder is just a threaded stud that can be removed with a 1/4" hex wrench inserted down into it. So, all I'll need to is get an identically threaded same OD stud that's just a bit longer to thread in. After that I can use a small finish saw and a drill to make a spacer / stone holder top extension from a piece of scrap wood if needed.

My KME was supposed to get here today but the wonderful USPS screwed up again. Hopefully tomorrow but I'm not holding my breath.

I was going to mention this, but I tried and couldn't get mine to budge... so thought maybe it was glued in or something. If you gets yours to budge, let me know how it goes.

I really don't think it would be too difficult to make a new stone holder for it. I've considered making one to use Edge Pro style stones.
