DMT Break in period

The 8'' x 3" DMT diamond stones that I ordered just arrived. I purchased the coarse 45 micron, fine 25 micron, x-fine 9 micron and medium extra fine 6 micron for my wood working tools. To the touch, the x-fine feels much more abrasive than the fine. Is this normal for new diamond stones? What is a typical break in period for these?

Sometimes, touching or feeling with the fingers is deceptive, as compared to how it actually works. That being said, the break-in might not take all that long; especially if you do some major grinding on a couple or three blades early on. There'll still be some moderate change in aggressiveness for a while after that, maybe over a few months; but, the rough-feeling stuff on the hones (as felt by the fingers) often comes off very fast. For those changes, it often improves with the honing of the first blade. If you do feel some unusual 'bumps' or noticeably coarser areas when new, you might 'volunteer' a cheap/expendable blade for some heavy scrubbing work, after which you'll hopefully see the rougher bumps go away. This is true with most stones in general, as they're almost always rougher-feeling when brand new; but a lot of that gets smoothed out with the first one or two uses.

Thank you David. I have several new old blades to sharpen (old tools that are new to me). Looking forward to trying these diamond plates tonight.
