DMT Dia-Sharp/nicks and scratches in new stone

Well, I ended up not sending the stone back to DMT after the phone call I made to them. I decided to do a third exchange with the retailer I used. Third time around I finally got a product I would expect from DMT. This one has much higher level of quality, the metal is smooth and even under the diamond, and the density of the diamond is even and consistent.

Thanks for the update.

... and even under the diamond...
I still use the bottom surface of my replacement 8E plate for quick & rough/careless 1K grit works. Although the diamonds only covered around 60% of the bottom surface.

The "nicks" you are seeing is perfectly normal. They are from the surface grinder that is used to level the plate before the nickle plate and diamonds are applied. They won't hurt the performance of the stone. The blade is riding on the tips of the diamonds, not the plate. Now if you believe the diamonds are actually thin on some spots then that is a problem to complain about. I have diamond plates that are 30 years old and they had grooves when new and still do but they will still cut tool steel very nicely. They feel very smooth but the diamonds are still there even though they are hard to see. The cutting surface will level out a little after you use it for a while but will still produce a fine edge. My diamond hones are the only stones I have ever owned that never needed flattening. All of my Washita and Norton stones have needed to be flattened over the years. I use a strip of blue zirconium from a huge sanding belt taped onto the top of my table saw. Brings them right down flat again.
