DMT rod or stone?

hey guys, i was looking into getting a dmt diamond sharpener. but i was wondering whether or not to get a rod or a stone(8inch). the rod is much cheaper but i cant lay it flat. the stone is much more expensive but it can lay it flat so it might be better for free hand. also i want to work up to the extra extra fine diamond. i sharpen a range of knives frome 11 to 2 inches in blade length.

ps. i have been making some knives so i was wondering what a good grit to start on would be for after the final heat treat.
