DMT stones Water or no water?

I tried using water out of curiosity on my Diasharp c/ec. I stopped after not seeing any real difference or feeling any real benefit.

That's why I've somewhat gravitated toward something a little more than water. I've liked the slicker feedback from using either the dish liquid & water, or from mineral oil-based lubricants. I was sort of unimpressed with just the water alone, on DMTs and also with my Lansky/Gatco diamond sets before that.

Having owned an aligner kit and now a set of bench stones using water on both to see if there was any difference didn't notice any difference kind of like using them dry that's just me . The one thing do now is clean them eveytime I use em .

David,

Thanks for some theory shared. The darker areas are at where sharpening happened (not all surface), those at the short side still shines. I guess it's either: metal embeddeed (cannot clean using toothbrush + liquid soap), or I dislodged the diamonds. The last is not likely, as I've been careful in using them, especially after reading tips here that for diamond sharpener, lighter pressure is recommended.

Will report back if I see any changes.

I've seen this is some other diamond plates, usually the coarse grades. My speculation is it might be the nickel tarnishing, why only in some areas (only where its been used) and not everywhere is another question. Have taken real close look at plates with this issue, plenty of abrasive still visible.

To the OP, I prefer a bit of dishsoapy water on the diamond plates. It isn't really needed, but it does make the plate easy to clean after use, just rinse under running water and pat dry. I also feel it tames the stone a touch, especially if it hasn't been broken in well, and gives me better feedback.

Water for me. I find they sort of "gloss over" at the finer grits...even course. X-Course could go either way but I always use water and sponge up as I work.

I rinse the plate in a pan of clear water every 20-30 strokes.

I clean it with dish detergent and an old tooth brush, then rinse with clear hot water and dry thoroughly.

BTW, the 2X6 DMT plates mounted on an Edge-Pro blank and used on the EP tool are simply marvelous for reprofiling and repairing damaged blades.
