I just picked up the Otanashi Noh Ken, I was super stoked as ive been wanting one of this line of knives. The problem is after only a week of light use the blade is starting to wobble like a drunk in Tijuana. Now ive had this problem with every framelock ive ever owned, granted ive only owned two others ie the Mini Razel from CRKT and one of the new Camillus "tactical folders. I would think after spending $100 on a knife the bugger would be solid as a rock. I love CRKT and in their defense I beat the heck out of the Razel. But the Otanashi I bought strictly as a PDW/CQB knife so I AM NOT subjecting it to my normal use and abuse (I own a nursery and teach wilderness survival/tracking/E&E) so needless to say my EDC knives have to be pretty tough. But again the Otanashi is just for my personal defense (and showing off cuz its freakin awesome) anyway, I digress. Is it something im doing??? Do all framelocks suck??? How do I stop it??? I love everything else about this knife, its big but slim, its got a WICKED blade that's sharp as they come and as a PDW/CQB knife its perfect but I just cant stand a loose blade. HELP!!!!

Side to side, ive tightened my other framelocks so they stopped the wobble but it always sems to get progressivly worse. Im hoping its something simple but I dont know. I'd almost rather just trade it for a linerlock Hisatsu but dang if this Otanashi isnt AWESOME

No all framelocks don't wobble. But every CRKT I've bought has developed blade play after a bit of use. I'm not a fan.

No, it shouldn't be doing that. Send it in.
I'm not familiar with their knives, but I assume they have a warranty.

I've never had a problem with a framelock. I've never had any in the price range you mention though.

edit- didn't know that was a CRKT model. I had a couple years ago(M16 models), and both wound up with blade play. One held up for about a year though.

Yah, ive been super happy with my other CRKT knives. One of my EDC knives is their M16-T and I love it. Its never had any problems and as I pointed out I beat the heck out of it. I guess i just have to call CRKT on Monday and see what they can do

Ive had the occasional framelock loosen over time a screwdriver and some blue Loctite and its all good again

SOME side-to-side move on crkt is nothing wrong. They use thicker washers than benchmade or kershaw, but their knives work very good. Best solution after talking with ckrt? Get red locklite :D

Hopefully they'll offer to fix or replace it. I only have two framelocks--a Kershaw Chive I haven't really carried much and a S&W Baby Swat that was my EDC before I got my first Mini Grip and it was my beater for a while up until recently. I've never used it to pry stuff, but I have never babied it either. It's never developed any noticeable blade play in either direction. It flicks open smoothly and the lock has never failed on me. This, from a company (Taylor brands) that gets no respect--the Rodney Dangerfield of knife companies. LOL

Did the world forget how to use tools?

Did you tighten the screw?

It's also not the framelock that's causing the issue otherwise it would wobble up and down.

You might want to call on Tuesday, Monday is a nationally observed holiday. Just sayin'.

On some knives(even really expensive knives) the pivot screw will loosen after being opened and closed a bit. Take the pivot screw out, apply loc-tite, and screw it in until you're satisfied, tight enough to have no play and still be smooth and such to your liking. The loc-tite will stop the screw from loosening.

If it has nothing to do with it being a framelock, then why have I only noticed this problem witg framelocks? And I am aware of the use of tooks, what I was kibda hoping was that after dropping a bill on a "rock solid knife" that maybe I wouldn't have to. Every one of my friends whi are knife people and the owner of my local high end knife shop have noticed this as being a problem. One would think that you shouldnt have to apply loctite to a knife to make it function as its supposed to. I digress, thanks everyone for taking a minute ti give ne some advice on this problem. Its much appreciated.

CRKT- I used to buy them long ago. The ones I had always had some problem, lock-up, edge rolling, I think they are crap. No matter what type lock they have.
My friend bought a Mah Eraser, liner lock, it was solid locking new. She never used it, but it is a flipper, with plastic washers, flips very smooth and nice, so it was flipped some and guess what? Just from flipping it now it has up and down play. No use what so ever, just flipping and not that much either.

My CRKT Ripple 1 framelock is still solid after 2-3 years although it only sees fairly light duty...

Drop the "T" and you're into the 'bank vault' class with CRK... ;)

Side to side play is determined by the tolerances between the washers, blade thickness, and inner handle thickness between the handle slabs. Most all knives will develope side to side play REGARDLESS OF LOCK TYPE. The rotating motion causes the screw to back itself out and even when well adjusted you can still have some side to side play. It's only a $100 knife, in the broad spectrum its still a low end knife.

The perception you have about the lock is imaginary. Locks can slip fail or cause UP AND DOWN PLAY but not side to side.

(BTW, I have a otanashi Noh ken and it has some side to side play but I'm not worried about it.)
