Do aluminum scales add anything to a folder?

I hate to do this again, folks, but I'll post a pic of my HTM one more time since the milling is phenomenal. Should you want more pictures, they are up in my review in the review forum, probably on page two.

I'm in agreement with Nevermind35 - as long as there is some other material on top of the aluminum its fine by me.

Also - there seems to be a difference between 6000 series and 7000 series aluminum, although I don't use a knife hard enough to see the difference.

Aluminum by itself doesnt lend itself to be "grippy". My first real folder was a BM 942 with Alum scales and it does get slippery when wet. It is 15 years old and I still have it, but I rarely carry it for that reason.

My ZT0500 MUDD has Alum scales w/ g10 overlays and it is a beast.

My BM Hardtail has Alum scales with g10 insets and it is a very durable folder.

I suppose it depends on the intended use of the knife. I love the "Alox" on the Victorinox. It's much thinner than the plastic and it seems more durable. As randomlooker said, you do lose some space for other tools.

But I'd trade that for the flatness and slightly classier look in brings to a SAK.

It seems to me like a lot of military-issue folders are aluminum handles. The Benchmade 5000 Auto Presidio, the XM-1 and the Benchmade Auto Stryker that used to be issued are all Aluminum handled. Any idea why that is??

I would guess it's cheaper to produce than say, g10, which is notoriously harder on machining bits.

IDK, many of the aluminum versions of blades cost more than the composite counterparts (Consider benchmade 520 vs 522), granted the composite version is sometimes FRN, not G10...

I would buy one of those Darryl Ralph knives because I like most of his designs and actually just got a Camillus Dominator. But the fact it is aluminum takes it out of the running. I just do not like it as a knife handle. I actually emailed him and asked if it might be possible to get one made out of G10 but he never wrote back which is just more reason not to get one.

I have a very few aluminium-handled knives and in fact one of them is a personal favourite: the Böker Turbine 2 "Companion" (an EDC-able smaller variant of the Turbine). I like the lightness of it, and in my case the G10 inlay adds warmth. The handle feels largely strong enough. The anodised colour layer has already scratched a tiny bit, but I think that an EDC should look used!

How much harder is 6061 with type 3 compared to 6061 with type 2.

Is type 3 going to scratch less ? If so how much less?
