Do files dull?

Duh, of course they do. How do I know when a file is dull?

Buy a new one. If it works a lot better than the old one, then the old one is dull.

When it does not remove anymore metal unless you are using a lot of force.

The edges of the teeth may start to look a little shiney.

You can easily tell by the feel, comparing a well worn file to a sharp new one.

Yep what Justin said. I always have a new one standing by to compare to a used one.
This means I usually buy my files in lots of two.|

Any recommendations on files? Tool Shop files from Menards, HF, Lowes? Are the more expensive ones worth the extra money?

I find the Harbor freight files from India to be as good as ANY file I have used. Have put them up against a Nicholson file and they lasted just as long. Great for the money. They have to be marked INDIA though.
