Do I have HIKV?

If there was SUCH a thing,"Don't you think I would have it & I DON'T!!

Strange....My lie detector needle went all the way into the red when I read this.

Hey, Randman,

You wrote, "I think I may have a problem. Until a few months ago, I didn't even know what Khukuri was."

Me: I've known OF them for decades. Just never looked at any until my 13 yr old daughter expressed an interest in them a couple weeks back.

You: "Then I started reading this forum. Then Uncle Bill had that sale on the Forth of July weekend...that sale... Now I have in my hands a 15" AK, an 18" WWII, two Chiruwa AK's, and an 18" Chitilangi. This is not the problem. The problem is that I want another Chitilangi, a couple of Sirupitis, a Gelbu Special, a Kobra, an M43, and a GRS."

Me: (resigned sigh) Yep. Dean invited me over two weeks ago I think. And I was immediately struck by a desire to get at least a couple of the models here. I had no idea that they had such variety in shape, size and weight. Within a couple days Uncle Bill had a two-for-one sale on his British Army Service models. How could I resist? And the moment I hefted one for the first time I knew I had a serious problem.

I just HAD to get one of those 18-inchers now. Just had to. But spent over week, at least an hour a day agonizing between the Chitlangi, Sirupati, Chainpuri, Gelbu Special and the awesome Mala. After a frustrating week, I decided to get one of the mid-weight models, so reluctantly crossed the Chainpuri and Mala off the list for the time being.

Still couldn't decide between the other three and finally just said to heck with it, and ordered all three. I figure if worse comes to worst, I can always sell the two that don't win First Place. But I kinda think all three will end up staying.....

Also order a 15" Sirupati for my kid. I'm hoping real hard that I don't like that one, or I'll have to get one of those for myself too.

You: "And the wife doesn't know I have even one of these yet."

Me: My wife saw my kid's sitting next to her computer and asked, "What is that huge knife sitting next to her computer?"

I replied, "That is a Khukuri from Nepal. Probably one of the single most utilitarian tools ever designed. It replaces the hunting knife, machete, hand axe and even pry bar. This one is modeled after the ones used in British Army Service. Since our daughter is getting the itch to go camping again, I thought it made sense to get one and be able to bring only one tool instead of three or four."

Okay. So now what do I say when she asks about the sweet 15" Surapati and my three new 18-inchers? She WILL find out about them. She always does about stuff like that..........

You: "Yes, I do believe a problem exists. One other thing, horn or wood? I only have one that is wood and thought that I liked the horn allot better, but the more I look at the WWII wood handle, the more I like it."

Me: I'm a bit of a dandified guy at times, and I love the look of horn and exotic woods, but there's something to be said for friendliness of feel that wood has. Plus, if the wood is nicely carved like the Chitlangi's on the website, that is a truly exotic and beautiful piece. I ordered the 15" and all the 18" ones with horn handles, except the Chitlangi, which I asked for in wood, simply because the one on the site looked so cool.

I am convinced that the workaround for this is to hire a caddy. Preferably someone knowledgeable in the Way of the Khukhuri...

Picture if you will, a khaki-clad explorer trudging through dense, jungle undergrowth along a faint game trail. Immediately behind him comes another man, stooped and sweating under the burden of a large, tooled-leather satchel with the initials "H.I." worked ornately into its sides. The first gent stops abruptly, confronted with an uprooted tree that has fallen across his path. Hardwood and about 18" in diameter, the log is covered with moss and creeper vines...

Explorer: "Hmmm...looks like Ironwood, and those vines are no joke. Almost two feet through...the ground's a bit muddy, with a four-degree slope, and the wind's about two knots, north-northwest. I think the eighteen inch WWII would make short work of this obstacle. Or perhaps the Hanuman...What do you say, old bean?"

Caddy: "If I may, sir...The sun's been out all day, and it's nearly four in the afternoon, so the wood's bound to be tough. With the dry weather, the slope won't present a problem...If I may suggest the Chiruwa, sir?"

Explorer: "Well, the last time I swung the Chiruwa, I nearly severed my leg. Are you sure about the slope? D'you think the ground's dry enough to hold my footing?"

Caddy: "Oh, absolutely, sir! When you had your...incident, the soil was wet clay. That, combined with your...rather vigorous chopping style, is what caused the mishap. As you can surely see, this hard-packed loam will hold your footing nicely. Really, sir, the Chiruwa is the only right choice!"

Explorer: "Ah. Very well, then; hand me the blade, and let's get on with it, shall we?"

Grunting, the caddy swings the bulging satchel from his shoulder and rummages inside, producing loud clanking noises and the occasional glimpse of a horn, bone or wooden handle, brass pommels winking in the green jungle light. He pauses, lets out a satisfied grunt, and pulls the Chiruwa in its scabbard from the bag. Turning to the explorer, the caddy presents the sheathed knife, handle-first, in its scabbard in the same way a Maitre d' would offer a bottle of the finest Bordeaux to a wealthy patron. Smiling, our intrepid man of adventure draws the blade. A faint smell of coconut wafts on the breeze, produced by the surf wax used to protect the blade from rust. With a flourish, the explorer turns, inhales deeply, and with a satisfied "chaaahh..", takes his first swing at the trunk...

:D

This is really funny:D

On a positive note, it appears that I have only spent about 1-2% of what LCS has, yikes! What a collection, do we know here who has the most? LCS must be a contender.

Uncle told me a while back, "You're getting there" Definite works of art and hard working tools. Think of the craftmanship (don't care what the PC folks say, it is still craftMANship) history, quality, spirituality, history, sweat, skill, etc, etc behind these fine tools. JP sent me one, (not on the HI list) that reeks of history and experience, thanks JP. Hopefully 'reeks' is not a negative description. A couple of AC Khuks that when I showed to my grandsons, they laughed at in comparison to the HI and JP KHUKURI.

Can't help my enthusiasm for Uncle Bill, Yangdu, Pala and all the crazy Kamis and Sarkis at Bir Gorka. May they all live happily, long and prosper. I know HI does its best to make their lives better.

Welcome Randman, I see the others have given you the usual hello.

Lcs, who do you work for and are they hiring?
