Do I need a butt plate?

Well not me of course. :D I'd need a butt first, something the good Lord in all his wisdom has decided not to bestow upon me, anywho...

I am working on a take-down type knife and I will be threading the end of the tang. I want to put a recessed end screw in there. Can I recess it directly in the wooden handle or would it be better to have a butt plate there (for lack of a better term) to recess the screw in. I am afraid that if I went only with the wood it could get loose with time and repeated disassembling/reassembling.

Thanks

Patrice

Not to get too personal however I feel you and your knife will loosen in time without butt plates.:D

Thanks Bruce, I will put one on the knife then.

As for me, I'll spare you the interesting WIP. ;)

I saw a good episode of "King of the Hill" once. Did you know Hank Hill doesnt have an ass either? LOL

If the design doesn't work with a butt plate, just put a round sleeve ( sort of like a thong tube) in the handle hole for the nut to bear on. A brass washer would also be a good idea between the nut and the bearing surface.

Now don't make fun of Hank, the poor man has a medical condition. I also suffer from "back with a crack" syndrome. If you make me a butt plate I think my insurance will cover it.

Thanks Stacy I did not think of that option. I may do it that way since it is my first take-down and I would like to keep things simpler if possible.

Some serious advice.

What you are looking for is to avoid contact between the nut and the wood of the handle. So go for the butt-plate.
