I currently have a Kershaw Leek, Extrema Ratio Fulcrum Folder, Microtech Ultratech and my newest addition a Combat Elite RRF. Do I need to get a Spyderco ATR to add to my rotation of EDC?

You're asking a knife forum with thousands and thousands of members if you NEED another knife for your EDC rotation?

Good God yes! :D

You ask on bladeforums whether you need a knife or not???????????

Eeeehh, that would be a yes! You most definitely need and ATR and since you are at it I think you should add a Manix, a Sebenza, a SERE 2000, the new Kershaw Offset and a few others as well :D.

The Ti ATR is a very impressive knife for the money. I am sure you will find room in rotation for it and you won't be disappointed, just don't take it apart those little torx screws break way too easy.

What did I miss, I mean I love Spyderco and all but what is it about this ATR that everybody creams over? :p

Mmmmmm, ATR.

I'll second the call for a Manix. Can't say anything about an ATR; I don't have one yet. But I think I NEED one..... :D :D

FWIW i like the ATR better than a manix.

though the SS ATR is good imho the Ti is better, and has better steel in the blade too. i have 2 Ti ATRs and have had 2 SS ATR's, great knives imho, carry well, great ergos, great F&F, is kinda pricey though.

my edc's are a emerson specwar CQC8, a pat crawford perfigo, and the ATR, not bad company for a lowly spydie imho and one of the very few production knives i do carry often, the other 1 being a ER fulcrum.

an ATR w/the ZDP would be cool but honsetly i have no probs w/the S30V,

Similar to other responses, my first reaction to your inquiry was;....

Do you need a Spyderco ATR ??? ........ Probably not.
Do you want one ? ........ Probably. :p

If you do decide to succumb to temptation, which you most probably will, you might like to acquire the titanium ATR, since it has been discontinued.

I second Nelson... I was browsing the Spyderco catalogs and just don't see what's so attractive about it over any other Spyderco...

My all-black ATR arrived yesterday. I'm very happy with it. Makes me regret not getting the original ti/s30v version. I thought it was too expensive. Now the consensus seems to be that it was a load of knife for the money. I wonder if Spyderco stopped production because the high price discouraged sales, and the profit margin, given the materials and workmanship, was too small.

Being a lefty, I switched the clip immediately. The lock operation is very lefty-friendly. I do get a little pinch upon opening, when the lock engages, depending on my grip. Typical awesome VG10 sharpness, fit and finish superb. Slick and definitive opening and locking. Too early to speak for edge retention, but my experience with this steel in several other Spydies leads me to believe that the cutting performance will be just fine.

The ATR is yet another success for Spyderco.

I got the opportunity to play with a fellow forum member's SS ATR when he sent it to me to Wave for him. I must say it was a very nice, very solid well built knife. It was also a silky smooth opener too.

I really liked most everything about it until I looked up the prices. I want one but haven't justified the cost yet to my other half. It has a real nice heft to it in the stainless model.

The only thing I can say that I didn't really like at all about the ATR was the pocket clip but for me that is no big deal because I'd simply make another one for it in a different configuration if I owned one. The way it was set at the factory the pocket clip held on far too tight for my tastes. It literally pulled my pants up for me and held on better than a suspender snap which is a bit too strong IMO.

On this one I got to see, I took the clip off and rebent it in my vice and that fixed it up nicely for the owner of it so it slid on and off easy and allowed the Wave to work like I like them.

Afterthought: STR, you are right about the clip. A little too tight. How does the waving work on the ATR? Does it cut into the cobra hood?

Let me tell ya. I think the sweetest Waved knife I've done so far is the BenchMade 420 Resistor and I carry it a whole lot. But if the guy that owned this ATR had offered to trade me for the BM I'd have taken the ATR in a heartbeat. It was a very smooth easy opening Waved knife that wasn't too hard on the pockets just like the BM. I liked how thin the ATR is primarily over the very thick 420. It wasn't that great until I rebent the pocket clip though.

Do you need a pocket knife with an insanely strong and reliable lock and a cutting-is-my-business-and-I'm-the-quadrillionaire-of-sharp style blade? Then you just might need an ATR...
