Do I really want a Spyderco Dice?

I'm new here and new to pricey knives. I've recently picked up a few. A Kershaw 1660CF, ZT0350, and a ZT0770CF. Those are pricey by my standards.

I tend to travel a lot and was looking for a flipper with a short blade and stumbled upon the Spyderco Dice. I figured this would be good to throw in my checked bag and take with me everywhere I go.

I think with its blade length it should be legal all across the US even in the commie areas, right?

I have difficulty opening most knives quickly that aren't flippers. Hence why I'd like a flipper.

Do you have one? Do you like it? Something in that size class you'd recommend more?

I'm not familiar with all the brands and what all is available, that's why I'm asking.

Thanks.

I own the dice. I cant answer the legal questions, but the dice is a nice blade. Due to the smaller size and weight of the blade it does not flip as quick as a longer heavier blade like the domino. It feels good in the hand and it looks nice. Adequate EDC for most daily user tasks. Three inch blade is my personal lower limit in size so I do not have a lot of smaller blades to recommend. The Mini Grip from Benchmade is just under 3 inches and I enjoy carrying that one. Once you learn how to flick most knives from benchmade and spyerco open as fast or faster than the flippers. There are a bunch of you tube videos showing techniques for flicking. Can be fun to learn a new skill. If three inches is acceptable take a look at the Domino, or Mantra, also Positron and the Para 3. Those with the Mini Grip are the knives I carry in the smaller class and they perform well for me.

I think some places have a 2.5" limit, that's why I thought the Dice would be a good travel knife.

Im actually sitting on a plane now and threw my recently acquired Real Steel Gerfalcon in my checked bag. Just going to PA so there shouldn't be any issues there. Figured the Dice would be good everywhere.

Just want to make sure it's decent and there aren't better options in that blade size.

Almost snagged one on here last night but missed it by a couple of minutes.

If you're good with 3" blades, I'll echo the recommendation of the Mantra (I prefer the 2) and the Positron...however, the Mantra2 is slightly over 3", just so you are aware.

No thoughts on the Dice, beyond that I had a Domino and really disliked it, but a suggestion about what type of knife to throw into your checked bag: make it a cheap one.

After having some knives stolen out of my checked baggage (my guess is that it was by the poorly paid low-wattage minds of the TSA--one time that a knife was stolen they still left the "inspected by the TSA" slip in my bag) I now always check a cheap knife I won't be too agitated about having to replace. If you're wondering about making some kind of claim against the airline/TSA/whoever, think again. Entertainingly, they blame each other for any losses so you're even less likely to find anyone even willing to lend an empathetic ear, much less try to help you. The last time I complained to the airline they openly blamed the TSA, telling me basically that the TSA steals everyone's stuff and that there is no way to fight the government goon squad so not to waste my time trying.

Nowadays I toss a SAK or a CRKT Carajas or something similar into my checked baggage when I fly, so I'm not out much if my bag gets selected for random thievery screening.

I owned a Dice, and as much as I wanted to love it.... I never warmed up to it. Maybe the short flipper tab and I never really meshed.

Check out the Rike Hummingbird it's a small dressy knife with good materials, and a few members here have one. Maybe they can chime in. I second evilgreg evilgreg though, consider getting something cheaper instead, maybe a CRKT Jettison Compact, that way if it "gets lost" you're out 30$ instead of a 100, and get yourself a nice Domino to keep around at home if you like the knife.

I don't have a Domino, but I agree with those who say don't put a knife in checked luggage that you will be very upset about when it disappears... and the nicer it is, the more likely it is to disappear, IMO.

As you have read above...NO DICE!

I would reco the Spyderco Pingo (2.5" folder) or Spyderco Chicago (2" folding blade). Check out google "10 Non-Locking EDC Knives to Carry" or something of this sort for a good selection. Stay under 2.5" for Chicago, and a folder must NOT be able to be opened by a gravity flick. NYC laws can be harmful to your freedom.

I travel with expensive equipment, have been for years. I haven't had any issues with theft yet. They do go thru my bag every single time. I leave a note telling them to pack it just as they found it. Got tired of them throwing my stuff in anyway they wanted after going thru it all.

I have a Spyderco Dragonfly G10 knife. I'm just not a fan. Bought a flipper, now I want more flippers. I feel "special" trying to open Spydercos.

If you must fly with an expensive knife.

Get one of the spectrum energetics custom utility blades. Then fly with no blade in it. Take it on carry on. Just buy a blade when you land.

Otherwise fly with a cheap knife.

Another vote on flying with a cheap knife. I play pool with a TSA agent. He’s in Newark airport.
He comes in at least twice a week with his ‘haul’.

Haul from people abandoning items they forgot they had on them or in their carry on, or haul from stuff he took out of people's bags?

To be honest, I'd almost welcome TSA stealing my stuff. I'd turn my stolen $20 item into a small claims suit just for the fun of it.
