Do Moderators ERASE Posts???

I could have sworn I posted regarding tight GUNSITE today, and to my dismay, when I returned to see responses, my post was no where to be found!!!

Is it common for MODERATORS to remove posts without reason? I like to think that most statements I make are based on my knife experience, coupled with my Engineering background. Have i said anything out of line? If so, how could I avoid doing it again in the future?

Thanks...

Steve in NYC

I doubt seriously if they deleted your post. It was probably some computer glich when you made your post.

I've seen some pretty bad posts the last couple years that probably "should" have been deleted

, but it never happened.

I'd re-post your response.

Good luck!

Only David or Spark will be able to answer your question definitively, but I'd imagine you were just a victim of the vagaries of the Internet. Did you revisit the thread after you responded to verify that your post was now included in the thread?

We generally do not delete posts. Sometimes we may move them but we ask that the post be locked in the current forum so you can see that it was moved, otherwise it would appear to be deleted.

The reason why why generally do not delete posts is so that if something was done against our rules you will clearly see the violation.

Chances are your post was never actually posted. The only time I have ever deleted a post was by a child (13 or 14) who was here only to play games using his fathers computer.

So try again.

Sometimes posts have to be deleted. Every now and then, I'll wake up at some odd hour and be unable to get back to sleep. I've learned that if I stay in bed, I'll toss and turn probably until dawn and never get back to sleep. But, if I get up and read, or surf for a half-hour or so, I'll go back to bed and just drop right off. About a year ago, I had one such episode. So, I logged on and there was a post made minutes earlier by a newly registered member using the name "SexToyGirl". You can imagine the content. I deleted it and then noticed that the number of posts this member had made was exactly equal to the number of forums we had at the time. Sure enough, this person had posted the same thing in every forum. I e-mailed Spark thinking he'd see it in the morning at at least minimize the damage. A few minutes later, I got a reply from him saying he'd cleaned it up. From this I devised my theory that Spark is not a real person but a robot built by Mike from spare parts left over from broken Halos. It was like four in the blessed AM his time and Spark was at the keyboard. Real people don't do that sort of thing.

Anyway, erasing a post is pretty drastic. Moving is done when appropriate and is closing.

It's entirely possible that you did post but that some data comm or routing error sent your post to the internet bit bucket. Which reminds me... I haven't emptied the bit bucket lately. I should check that since it's a mess when it overflows. Anyway, IP, that's Internet Protocol, works pretty well but it is not a guaranteed protocol. It's a good thing we didn't elect Al Gore president.

Sorry.

Does that include belching and flatulence? Sorry. Just a random thought.

And I haven't even had anything to drink yet.

Almost never do posts get deleted here. It's even rare that moderators edit posts, and when they do it's for good reason and that is made clear. Having said that, if I were the moderator of this forum, I would have a hard time not deleting this thread just for the sake of irony

Deleting posts - Only if it is double tap.

If one showed up that was way out of line, I might move it to the Moderator's Back End forum (maybe we should change the name of that one

) rather than delete it.

It has been rare that I have edited a post in the Custom Forums. Last time it was a friend's who got a little carried away in posting a for sale item there. If I do not know the person I will ask for the poster to edit the stuff themselves in private email. Most do.

I am sure to catch a little good natured grief from my friend on it in a couple of weeks. Trust me we will have fun with it.

Now I am shaking, after all most of the knives he collects are very "big honkin' bowies".

Sure hope I get outa the big-house so he doesn't have to come downtown for a jail cell visit.

Oh, right. I forgot about those. I do delete them. That's not really the same thing, though. That's just housekeeping. Nothing actually gets taken away.

Posts are never actually deleted, although sometimes, according to my calculations, they end up orbiting Pluto, along with ballpoint pens, paperclips, missing socks and old I Love Lucy episodes. (Note: this may also explain the origins of the mysterious belts around the planet Saturn.)

I have never deleted a post, and have only closed a few threads. Sorry yours disppeared. Please try again!

If we delete a post, you'll know it.

Generally when we get people saying "WHERE'S MY POST!!!! WHO DELETED IT?!?!?!?" it typically means that their browser or ISP is caching the forum pages, which results in them not seeing the most current, up to date information; not that we deleted it.

Check your browser preferences and make sure they are set to not cache pages.

Les Robertson has deleted large sections of threads on the discussion of "Randall's" and the definition of "custom knives".

Yes, but where did this happen? In his forum, or in the Custom Knife Forum? If it's in his forum - it's his forum, he had his reasons.

Spark, you're absolutely right, but I responded to the question, "Do Moderators erase posts?"

I have seen far less activity on Les's forum since he did that. I don't know if there is a correlation between posting activity and removed posts but I'm sure I'm not alone in hesitating to post on a controversial subject, or risk even being ignored, where this is going on.

I've seen Les post more lately in the Custom forum than on his own. It may be that there is more traffic there than on the Les Robertson forum. I wonder why?
