I have noticed all the high end knives on the sales forum that are a few years old and never cut anything. This got me thinking......Are most people that buy higher end knives scared of using them in fear of lowering their flip value?? Are they noting more than knife currencies? It seems like the lower end grunt knives are used for everyday activities, but the higher (bet you life on construction) knives are safe queens.

Most knife users, especially outside the forums, get ordinary knives for everyday use. Forum users have access to more information, and often buy more expensive, more appropriate or effective knives.

One reason you would see so many safe queens for sale is that these knives were not bought for use. They were bought for collector value, even for eventual sale. But many identical knives were bought for use -- you just don't get to see them on the Exchange (as 5.56 just showed).

Like, like I bought a Sebenza as an investment.

It's value is going down faster than my stocks and bonds.

I use my Sebenza ALOT. And honestly i wouldn' t get nearly as much joy out of it if it was just lying around

Esav is right, the knives you see "for sale" are generally knives that aren't needed or being used.

My user SnG pictured above has sentimental value and will probably never end up on the exchange.

my sebenza is probably my most used folder. why buy a nice knife if you arent gonna use it? ;)

i would say most buyers of expensive ($400-$600) knives use at least some of them.

but that doesn't mean all expensive knives get used.

im a user, but ive bought knives that never got used, so eventually sold them.

I think you would be hard pressed to see a Sebenza drop in value.

I use all my knives unless they are non-users. I had a second Umnumzaan that I didn't use because I have the first one. I have a pair of Regulars that get used, though I might send them in to get blasted and tumbled like new again.

I'm looking at a Strider to use (field dressing, skinning, etc). I'm also into watches and I'm the kind of guy that uses a $11k Submariner Rolex to actually dive with. I like to see gear in action. I am trying to see how these higher end knives perform in the field. How well the blade coating holds up,etc...

I haven't skinned a deer with my smf yet but the umnumzaan is a great deer skinner. Hopefully I'll be able to comment on the other soon. As far as finishes that hold up I think stonewash is the best for not showing use.

I use all my knives. I have been called crazy a few times when people see my gold class grip in my pocket.

If I had one I'd use it a lot cause I think it's a waste not to. Also, I'd
have little reservation because from what I understand you can just
send in knives like CR Sebenzas, Striders, R. Hinderers for reconditioning,
new bead blasting, sharpening, etc. free of charge or little charge. After
that it looks brand new!

To go off of what a couple people already said, I think it's a bit of selection bias. The high-end knives that are getting used aren't getting sold, it's the ones that are bought for collecting or re-selling that are on the market, and obviously those aren't being used to their full capabilities.

As for me, my most "high end" knife is my new Endura. I offered to help a friend slice up some carpet because it cut through like butter, but she said she was afraid to ding up my "expensive" knife. It all just depends on how you look at the value of a knife, whether it's monetary, usefulness, coolness, etc.

Oh, sorry, I thought I mentioned it - Carter wharnie.

Nice Murray Carter and nice Moleskin...

Here are my thoughts on users and safe queens...

Some of us knife geeks have a lot of knives on our list that we want. Some of these are expensive, some are VERY expensive. I have noticed that when I purchase a nice knife, particularly a custom, I find myself experiencing a true sense of admiration for the craftsmanship that goes into the blades. Every detail from the handle, pins, steel, grind, polish, coating, everything is a piece of art, and sometimes it is hard at first to justify using and eventually damaging a work of art like that.

Don't get me wrong, I don't own any safe queens, and all of my knives are users, but there is always a phase like this that happens when I get a new knife. Once I get that first scratch or scuff on it, then it's "mine", and it becomes working art. Some people have a harder time getting over that than others, and some people never do. I will never buy a knife that I will never use, but I can certainly understand why somebody would.

I used my Murray Carter for several years and dinged and dented it and scratched it and so on. I love that knife. I did always have a little voice in the back of my head telling me to take it easy on it though, because it's expensive and it just seems more delicate to me. Now that I have my Izula for EDC, that little voice is pretty much gone. Since it isn't expensive, has an awesome warranty, is designed to be used hard, I have fun doing just that. I still carry my Murray Carter as well, but having a knife that you feel totally comfortable using and abusing without giving it a second thought is fun.

Some people can do that with $400+ folders like Striders and Sebenza's, others can't. Use what you are comfortable using

I like to use my knives but there are some that just sit in my display case.

I personally don't feel I would ever own any sebenzas striders, ect. They personally aren't appealing to me.
