Do others close to you appreciate your CRK hobby/love/obsession?

I try to explain the quality of a fine knife.
I show knives in different qualities and therefore different price ranges.
It's about understanding quality (material, fit and finish, design).
The price-performance-ratio is a very personal thing, as I have experienced.

Sometimes I wonder how things would be if more people would get it.
Imagine the wait for a Chris Reeve knife.
Probably it's better the way it is - a "relatively" small community of those who understand. ;)

I think you're right on all of those points. I also believe price to performance ratio isn't linear in knives, but in a lot of cases that isn't what it's about to someone who can appreciate it. Same with a lot of other things.

Right on ^

And again, right on ^^

Those guys burning up $300 of ammo are leaving all the brass on the ground too, aren't they? That shows how smart they are. That is by far the most expensive part of shooting. If they handloaded they could shoot far more for far less money.

Point being they don't think things through, or don't want to bother. So let them do their thing. I choose to disagree and handload, and shoot far many more rounds than they can for far less money. You follow the process correctly and it's just as safe as factory. Just do it right and don't cut any corners. I've been handloading for 33 years and counting.

And enjoy being here with those of us who understand the enjoyment it brings to have a CRK, or several, or many if you can swing it. To me they are like some people view Rolexes, or the 740i mentioned.

I followed the part of so many, buying a ton of knives that are sitting in the (finished) basement back in their boxes the way I bought them. I'll never need them. They are all LNIB, about 40 of them.

So I've decided to thin the herd myself now, and with that money I'll buy three small Sebbies; a CF Sebenza lefty, a CF Insingo when they become available, and a lefty micarta Sebenza if I can find one. If not, a small right-handed micarta Sebenza will do just fine.

A win-win; have less knives on the dresser, but ones that I'll really ENJOY carrying.

So you are not alone. My girlfriend does not understand knife collecting, and she thinks they run about $40.00.

It's my money, I carry my share of the financial load, and as the old saying goes, "if I have to explain it to you, you'd probably never understand."

My wife does not appreciate my knife purchases and see them as an unfair waste of money. Zero interest. I have no choice but to just do my own thing and not share the details with her. (painful and frustrating). I fortunately have two daughters (age 15 and 17) who appreciates knives and my passion for it. They each started their own collections recently. When I recently got a Starbenza they were all over it.

My wife doesn't mind it much but I think it's because we have our own budget for nonessential stuff and we can spend it on what we feel like. She understands that I enjoy owning them and I use my money for them. I think that helps, but if you don't allocate funds I can see it being an issue. Not that it would be with everybody but it lends itself to issues.

Everyone thinks I'm nuts. I have yet to find one person who understands. This is why tapatalk is on my home screen. Lol

I'm the one you see picking up their brass at the end of the day. ;)

I'd have to say that I'm pretty blessed with a family that tries to see what I appreciate in my hobbies, and come along side me as best as they can.

Of course, I analyze the mechanical integrity and give my style and ensemble compatibility feedback when it comes to their Coach bags, Danskos, and the like.

Wow what a collection! I've gotta ask what your daughter's inlay is? Never seen one like that before. Now that's a family with good taste. But you left out your EDC... :)

Great post! My wife has always been very supportive. She gets me a new knife every Christmas. A few years ago I saw that she was starting to feel left out. I had always made sure she carried a great knife. She was starting to look at my limited edition crks and say wow I would love to have one like that. So I decided to find her a knife that would surpass most of my collection for her. I found a small regular nib vines that matched her bday. After I gave her that knife she has since loved all of my trading back and forth and new editions. Keep it sharp. AK

Great thread oufaengr!! As everyone knows I like yourself have not been involved in what I like to call "This Thing of Ours" for that long.. I purchased my first Chris Reeve Knife just last summer.. most of my friends don't understand it at all. Hundreds of dollars even thousands for a knife?? But yet they will spend many times that on a trip to some third world shit hole to sit on a beach and drink corona.. I don't get it.. honestly if it were not for the Forums and YouTube and instagram etc... which gives me the ability to share my love of these fine tools and works of art with my fellow enthusiasts It would not be as enjoyable.. but I would still be addicted never the less!! And by the way Buck I don't think your crazy!! Maybe a little odd but not crazy!!;) Well at least not any more than the rest of us..
Again thanks for posting a great thread oufaengr!!
And as always, all the best!!
Dave

Wow what a collection! I've gotta ask what your daughter's inlay is? Never seen one like that before. Now that's a family with good taste. But you left out your EDC... :)

I always wanted to give my daughter a pink inlaid CRK. There were a few that could arguably be called pink, but I didn't really like the hue of them. When I was at Blade several years ago, I bought a couple blocks of pink dyed box elder, and as a personal favor, Anne had some Mnandi's build up for me from one of the blocks. This is one of those knives.

My EDC . . . there are several floating around the house. On the large side, I've been switching off between a couple plains -- a 25 and a large classic. For a small, I carry this small Classic with cocobolo inlays and Southard tactical backspacer:

I need to find a suit 'n' tie EDC, but am having a hard time choosing. One of the top candidates is an Mnandi with ebony on one side and inner-cut ivory with some very unique coloring due to mineral discoloration on the other.

My girlfriend is incredibly supportive. She knows that I'm not going to spend myself into the red, so when a knife shows up, it's no big deal. Matter of fact, she has talked me into buying a couple in the past when I was waffling. She knows how happy it makes me. She's a collector too, of high end purses, so the "get what you pay for" mentality is shared.

I've got myself a keeper.

But yet they will spend many times that on a trip to some third world shit hole to sit on a beach and drink corona.

Haha, this is great. I've got to remember this one for the future...even though I'll be doing that in a few weeks (fortunately not a shithole though ;)).
