Do people actually take their sharpening equipment to camp?

I carry diafolds and a small strop, 14 pounds of diamond plates gets a bit heavy in you back pocket.

I might take a ceramic steel or a Ceramic stone depending on what I plan on doing.

A carry a DMT diafold everywhere I go. Either in the car, the BOB, or the mini one for my key chain for emergencies. Typically a blue/red, and if I have room the blue/black. This combo will get me through. I've made a mini loaded strop that works very well that comes along.

Doesn't get much lighter weight than this does it?
Diamond credit card by DMT...we're only talking "touch up" right?

Except for my folder, my camp knives are convexed. I take a piece of sandpaper along and place it on my thigh. After a few swipes I'm good to go.

There are many good ideas and many compact asharpeners. There is however, nothing that beats the DMT diafolds IMO. I am totally sold on them. They are now about all I use at home too.

I've been using the Fallkniven DC4 and it works really great, I always have on me and i actually use it for the kitchen knives also. I have multiple benchstones from japanese to diamonds, but I don't even use them I just use the DC4. That little thing is worth the money, just keep it clean with a good bath in soapy warm water and dry it well and it will last you a lifetime. Plus it comes in a neat leather pouch, its very compact and it doesn't have that plastic feeling I get with DMT products (they are very good by the way)

I keep a green/white diafold in my M1 bag that stays in the car along with my ZDP D4. If I need to take anything else for an extended trip, I've got a pair of 804s that seem to do a good job until I can get back home.

I am sure its common knowledge to most but being a newie I cannot seem to find the lil credit card diamond sharperners, can someone please post a link?,,thanks

thanks for the quick reply,,seems I have found a gold mine of knowledge here, I hope one day to be able to return the favor and be a help to someone myself,,

If car camping, I would definately take sharpening gear. Full Sharpmaker kit with diamond rods and ultra fine rods, my leather belt for a strop, 1" x 30" belt sander, perhaps a buffer with paper wheels on them. I also have a power inverter that would convert the 12v car power outlet into 110v up to 650 watts. :) If the location permitted (campground, event, etc rules considered) I'd put a sign in my Jeep window "Dull knives and axes don't have to stay that way".

Last time I went on a hiking trip, I took the full Sharpmaker kit, two diafolds, and the Duckfoot sharpener. Next time it will be the Spyderco Profile set and the Duckfoot only.

Yes. I did anyways. I've sat on the end of a pick up truck on the tail gate by a roaring fire with my Edge Pro several times and sharpened knives for family while we shared stories of the day. More than this I most always had a EzeeLap diamond hone or a DMT hone of some kind with me in the glove box of my car or back pack and gear for quick touch ups when needed.

You took all that? Wow, you take more powered sharpening tools than I have in my garage. The most I'd consider for a camping trip is my Sharpmaker and maybe the Double Stuff pocket stone.

Dear Splat, Don't sharpen a knife on your leg. Use the neighbor's cat.

I always have a DMT Diasharp 1" x 4" fine hone with me, it is very easy to carry and smaller than a cell phone. If I'm going out of town or camping I keep my DMT coarse, fine and extra fine 2" x 6" Diasharp stones in the truck, along with a green compounded loaded strop. I have found that I don't like the aligner systems, instead preferring free hand almost exclusively. After spending plenty of money on Lansky, Spyderco and other systems, nothing works as well for me as DMTs diamonds.
