Do people actually take their sharpening equipment to camp?

When I head out to the hunt camp, my knives are sharp, and in good shape.

I do take a small stone set just in case, but I don't really sharpen my knives while there.

I do however, wind up putting an edge on some of the knives my buddies bring.

I always carry in the door of my pick-up the 1X3" EZ-Lap diamond stone but its too fine and too small to sharpen much on . For a very slight touch up its ok . Then I keep a 2X6" Norton India coarse/fine stone under the seat which will do more serious sharpening . In my day pack is a 2X6" well worn DMT blue, the holes I don't care for but its lite and has a thick enough base to keep fingers out of the way and still works . I'll replace it someday with my 2X6" EZ-Lap fine, also worn . A bit heavier but won't break and just need to chisel a groove in a board in order to have finger clearance then glue a strop to the other side . DM

A blue/red DMT diafold does 90% of my sharpening, and I have one stashed in several places. I have also been using the Spyderco med/fine 1x4 ceramic as a finisher lately, and having great results with that combination.

Doesn't get much lighter weight than this does it?
Diamond credit card by DMT...we're only talking "touch up" right?

+++ on that I carry the 325,600,1200 grits and a little piece of leather to strop, it all fits in an Altoids can, you can imagine the size......

I've been using the Fallkniven DC4 and it works really great, I always have on me and i actually use it for the kitchen knives also. I have multiple benchstones from japanese to diamonds, but I don't even use them I just use the DC4. That little thing is worth the money, just keep it clean with a good bath in soapy warm water and dry it well and it will last you a lifetime. Plus it comes in a neat leather pouch, its very compact and it doesn't have that plastic feeling I get with DMT products (they are very good by the way)

Same here! Does everything I need, great little stone!

I Don't usually sharpen my knives in the field. I make sure they are sharp before I go out and then sharpen them when I come home again. I do how ever carry either my 2x6 exrta coarse DMT stone or an old 3x4 Arkansas stone my grandpa gave me when I was only a few years old. At home of course I use the Sharp maker or sand paper.

On a side note, didn't it seem like Mr Myers was pushing kind of hard on the stones? I always try and use light pressure. Is that correct?

He was also running the blade off the stone chipping the end of the stone. Not great for the blade either.

I always bring some means of sharpening my knife to the woods, like a small diamond abrasive or a small stone, for instance. I am looking at making a small leather hone, to fasten to a tree or my shoe or something.

I always have a DMT Diasharp 1" x 4" fine hone with me, it is very easy to carry and smaller than a cell phone. If I'm going out of town or camping I keep my DMT coarse, fine and extra fine 2" x 6" Diasharp stones in the truck, along with a green compounded loaded strop. I have found that I don't like the aligner systems, instead preferring free hand almost exclusively. After spending plenty of money on Lansky, Spyderco and other systems, nothing works as well for me as DMTs diamonds.

same here;I find DMT's last longer.
I have a pair of small keychain stones,red/blue that I epoxied back to back
and those are my pocket touch-up stones.
DiaFold goes with on camping trips as well.
Best sharpening $ I've spent.
Avoid Smith's diamond stones;they don't last nearly as long!
(Cheap, made in China copy of DMT)

Camping box has a tiny 4in file, a spyderco double stuff and a 2x8in strip of leather with green compound.
Light and fully covered.

Hiking I take a 1.5x6 charged leather strip and a tiny ezeelap diamond rod.
