do people get all sweaty and freak out when you show them your khukuris?

If they do, they don't let on about it.

I occasionally get asked why I'd want to study swordsmanship. My standard answer is that I'm diversifying my resume. It seems to work.

I am in fact a complete nutcase so it isn't an issue for me :D
Maybe it's a credit too me that I don't know people who would freak out over such a thing, well I probably do but I can't think of who they may be.:D ;)

If it's any consolation I agree about the nut case part.:D ;) :p

Depending upon who I'm showing it to, I don't necessarily mind if they get sweaty.

Did I say that??

Yes, you said that.

If one was too get sweaty, depending upon who it was it would depend on what kind of sweaty. Fear sweat smells different than excited sweat, especially on females. That is whom you were talking about wasn't it?;) :D hehehehehe, Yvsa's evil chuckle.

Busted. Male sweat does NOTHING for me.
Well the post did. It got ya water fer yer cacti from me just 'cause I thought it wuz phunny.:D :D :D :D

Kis, you got the number of 'A's correct, just in the wrong place (slightly).

Should such a study exist, and be even slightly accurate, then the ladies in my spin class would either be all over me (sigh; isn't happening) or running screaming from the room. I doubt that 'total indifference' is one of the typical reactions to the amound of bodily fluids (don't go there!) that I leave on the floor every day.

Ardvaark?

You know, somewhere there is a study, or list of subliminal responses that humans have, including male sweat on females.

Should be somewhere on the internet. Actually pretty interesting.
I used a pheromone line on a girl one night long ago. It worked delightfully well.;)
Probably wouldn't work on all of them, I probably was just lucky and got lucky, but fer a whole 6 months!!!! :D

Kis, just read the link:

Pheromones in male perspiration reduce women's tension, alter hormone response

If it had said "reduce women's INTEREST", I would have been more inclined to believe. But then, I'm married.

I've said this before but I have shown them to my extended family (mostly hunters) and got a less than warm response. I got every thing from the encouraging comments from my cousins who said that they looked to big to be practical to carry (about an 18" kobra... they hunt light and took my comment about cutting tooth brushes in half to save weight seriously), to my great uncle who said "have you gotten $55 of use out of that?" There were also some comments about field working and sugar cane.

My great uncles stainless steel fillet knife was much more welcome than my handmade general purpose tool. That day my great aunt made some comment about the old garden tools that she has hanging on the side of the milk barn. Something about good old tools that aren't made anymore.

Glad to hear that most of you have had better experiances than me.

edit: the light (light meaning they pack very light but are quite hardcore)hunters said that even the karda was heavier than they would want to carry. Maybe next time I go hunting with family I should bring a BAS or Pen knife? Both of which still need to be bought.

a friend of my wife's was staying with us for a few days. We all went hiking and she saw my kumar karda and she freaked out about it...I decided not to show her any of my khukuris at that point :)

I sometimes carry a Pen-knife when I hunt. My hunting daypack weighs 25 pounds and it has allowed me to stay out as long as necessary to get the job done, including unplanned overnight stays in hellaciously bad weather. I just can't see getting worked up over a few extra ounces here and there. Everything in my pack got there because it was needed.

That heavy pack also keeps me in shape; how can a guy be expected to pack out an elk quarter - let alone going back four more times to pack out the rest of it - if his body's not accustomed to being burdened?

I guess "Hunting light" is fine so long as you make it back before nightfall. But almost every year we recover the body of at least one "light hunter" who was ill-prepared to survive one cold night outdoors.

Anyway, didn't mean to hijack the thread, wandering back to the topic... I only "show" my khukuris when I'm outside working with one. The usual reaction I get is along the lines of, "wow, what an effective tool."

Wow. Good story, thanks. I hope everything is OK with you and he is not a danger.

I very much doubt that he is, I upgraded to my 870 in my truck, and kept a .357 and a .45 on my person 24/7 for awhile, but...I haven't seen the guy since that day. I also felt better that I'd never introduced him to my wife or son, and that I never showed him where I lived. (not that such information is difficult to obtain these days) Truth is, I THINK the guy was just planning to intimidate me, not that I was going to take chances. Thanks for the concern though!

I liked Raghorns post alot too- I entirely share his perspective on that matter. I've always carried a heavier load than anyone else, and taken alot of crap for it, but....on one night inparticular when we got our snowmachines stuck in the mountains overnight, I suddenly became quite popular, being the guy with tinder, matches, water, a knife, and some cider mix. Although that being said, I'm curious what Raghorn is carrying in his pack...it sounds like he's more comfortable with his than I am with my own.

My father loves giving me crap about the khuks, my brother remains skeptical, but usually less antagonistic, and my mother just scratches her head and wonders how things went so far wrong with me. One friend remains quiet, but clearly unenthusiastic. (the same way I do with his remote control cars, so that's fair)

Incidentally, my other buddy (I only have two of them *l*) and I got into a debate last night over the usefulness of my khukuris..He's challenged me to a few days in the woods with a light fannypack and my khuk to see if I can outdo his Ontario Machete with it. I guess we're gonna make some shelters, some traps and fires, and all that fun stuff. Personally, I'm not all that competitive about it, and I don't think there's gonna be a clearcut "winner"
but it sounds like it oughta be pretty fun anyways.

Runs With Scissors, that's a rather interesting story indeed.

And Raghorn, I'm not (yet?) a hunting person but I like to hike and I carry a real daypack with full preparations for anything that would happen including an unexpected camping holiday...water, 1qt ziplock bags, Katadyn filter, chlorine tabs, a good khuk and a knife, extra socks, garbage bags, tinder, 2 or 3 ways to make fire, wool sweater, Glock, pepper spray, 2 or 3 good flashlights etc. And I still have room in my daypack. I love being prepared. I just can't comprehend people I see who go out in the woods or mountains without even a bottle of water

For that matter I can't imagine going out into the countryside without being armed. A khuk at a minimum. In fact, when I went on a hike with my wife and her friend, we were at the top of Mary's Rock with a panaramic view of the Shenandoah Valley, and she gasped as she saw my Kumar Karda. Now she is single and should be hiking with a firearm, duhh! But she is scared of a little knife.

My intuition is that when people see a big knife or khuk it pulls levers in their unconscious that deal with fear of losing control. Somehow a big knife does this more than anything else...it makes people feel suddenly helpless and we all need to feel in control in order to feel personally secure.

it's all fun, games and laughter until your buddies run out of water.

I decided to start a new thread on the topic; good excuse to inventory the pack. ;)
