Do People Use Bowies For Anything?

i like to use my bowie from hacking bush while hiking to preparing food for dinner (followed by mothers rolling eyes).

Strictly from the collectors standpoint (which is NOT me), an "Authentic" Bowie will come from the 15 or so years prior to the invention of the revolver, was of a certain size (large), and here's the use point, designed to serve and be used as a sidearm. Back in the days when two shots meant two pistols, if you've got 3 enemies you need that sidearm.

Bowies still have relevance today. There may be "better" weapons available these days, but bowies remain devastatingly effective. Anyone who has used a chef's knife will have a basic understanding of how to wield a big blade. Not to mention the fact that their purchase is unregulated, travel is easier with one that with a gun, and they remain potent long after the local Wal-Mart has sold out of ammo.

I have one. I like having options.

It's an interesting question. As others have pointed out however, there is considerable variation in what a "Bowie" actually is. A "Natchez" style Bowie is pretty different than a Marble's "Ideal." Some of these variations have broader, more general usefulness than others, imo.

Whether it is one of several styles we refer to as a "Bowie," or whether it's something more akin to a Hudson Bay, I think there are still a variety of uses/needs for such a knife, depending on what one does when they spend time outdoors. In essence, I think that what we're really talking about is the traditional idea of a large "camp knife," and if you're someone who still needs a knife for large animal butchering, camp chores and splitting wood, among other things, then I'd say the answer to the OP's question is "yes." If you're someone who doesn't need a knife that can do all these things, then you probably wonder why anyone in this day and age would ever own one as anything other than a collector's piece on the mantle.

I think big knives still have their place, and I like them. In fact, there's a very nice Bowie/Camp knife that I'm lusting after right now. And no, it won't be a shelf queen...:D
