Do women belong in the kitchen or the shop?

Personally I think girls belong in the kitchen, guys belong in the kitchen, everyone belongs in the kitchen...that's where the food is! As for the shop here's my first finished kitchen knife, it's a belated wedding present for my brother and Sis-in-law. It's a whole different deal forging these things, they're so thin and grinding them is like grinding a noodle. Looking forward to the Seattle show where I can pick up some advice from the pros. In the meantime all comments/advice welcome! The blade is 5 3/4" X 1/16 OAL 10 5/8 1080 and 15N20, with a box elder handle. Speaking of wedding presents here's another one I finished this week. Around here starting life together often means some serious time in the boatyard fixing up a new-to-you vessel to get ready for fishing season next year. This is a set of caulking and reefing tools. Now before you make any smart comments like (Whatdya pound that outa somethin hot with your eyes closed?!) keep in mind that while I'm fairly comfortable making blades I'm a very cut-rate blacksmith. They aint pretty but they do fit their boat seams. -HD

Looks very Nice Haley, has a much better shape to it than most of the santoku That I see posted here. It could use a little more belly(curve ) in the edge especially near the tip but it is certainly usable as is.

Thanks for the comment Bill, I think I see what you mean. I'll remedy it on the next one.

Lorien I hope you guys don't take the title too seriously, I have a despicable sense of humor :o

Well, as I demonstrated in a 60 page section my new book, "The Feminine Touch"
is becoming more and more evident in the world of modern knife making/collecting….

All the best,

My answer to the title question would be Yes, and to both. Of course, its a lot more fun being in the kitchen when you've got a knife like that one to use. Looks like a good first effort, and avoids many of the problems "field knife" makers make when they venture into kitchen knives. Look forward to seeing more.

Women belong in the kitchen, shop and especially the bedroom or any place else they want to be.

They aint pretty

I disagree. I think they look pretty darn good. Now, if I only knew what "reefing" meant . . . . I'm guessing its sorta the reverse of caulking.

I did emancipate Mrs. Powernoodle so she could attend law school. Of course, she also changed the sheets and made some nice muffins before she left the house this morning, so it turned out okay.

While my wife is off during the summer she will spend as much time in the shop with me as she can. Usually just as an observer, but occasionally I will put her to work picking out handle materials and tracing handles for sawing. Now in the kitchen, she is a spectator there as well. Again, she will assist any way she can, but the best assistance she can ever supply is just her willingness to always want to be by me.

oops! Forgot my smiley, post edited :)
as for treeshaker's post, that's despicable...and bonus points for being super creepy

While I understood Haley's opening comment as I did and actually agree that everyone
should enjoy sharing the kitchen, I truly admire women knifemakers...

To me, the picture below symbolizes the Feminine Touch in the world of
Knifemaking. Here Dellana's fingertips were photographed while she was cutting
the pearl scales for the handle of an art folder she was making.

Photographed for my book "The Art Knives of Van Barnett & Dellana" (2011), I chose
to use this picture again as the opening page for a section on women knifemakers
& collectors in my new book….

All the best,

Love that knife, Mrs. Desrosiers, and really dig those tools. Cut rate nothing!

And treeshaker, old boy, I hope there's a facepalm in your future...sometime after you pull your foot out of your mouth.

Great job, Haley!

Women belong anywhere they want to be. LOL I agree that you may want yo ad a little more belly in the middle of the blade then towards the tip. The rocking motion is fairly standard with the Satoku but I have had a couple ordered with less curve lately?

Your blacksmithing work looks great to me!

Guess I really muddled the thread by the title, at least we got to see a great pic of the talented Delana's lovely nails:thumbup:

David, I'm very excited about your new book! I started a FB page last year for us called Ladysmiths Int'l where we've been sharing whats on the bench, thoughts and advice. If anyone hasn't seen the scissors Grace Horne is making now you're missing out! We're also cooking up a crazy collaboration blade that will have seen many countries before its finished :)

Many thanks to G.Shahan, Stickfigureforge and Lorien for keeping it classy.

Treeshaker, I'm assuming you don't mean any harm but I would prefer to relate on a little higher level than that. Maybe we can do better next time?

On lighter note here's something I made to get a laugh out of the girls. Thanks everyone for taking the time you look at my knife and comment. I'm already excited about improving the next one. Have a great weekend.

Love the 6 pix with perceptions of what you do Haley! Well done.

That handle looks really comfortable, love the shape and material.

Don't know a thing about boats and ships (I do cars and motorcycles) so those implements look a little scary to me
