Do world class collectors come / post here?

I'm not "plugged in", so I don't know many of said world class collectors. I know I have seen Dave Ellis post here, and I know he has his sweet little reserved domain on The Other Forum, but apart from that, I am not sure. Gave, Marcel, and a few others are no slouch, but on the other hand I don't recall seeing Ed Wormser or Don Guild here. I wonder why.

Another question is: would it be good for us to have them post here? More nice pictures maybe...

Dave - I was referring to the fact that at some point you had your own subforum. I would assume that if that's the case you'd be more likely to post there than here. That's all.

how many "world class" collectors are there?

while it would be hard to precisely say... what percentage of total sales of custom knives does this group represent?

it is easy to see the effect of a couple of "mega-collectors" can have on prices ... look at the fluctuations of the ken onion market

Would be very hard to determine quantity of "world class" collectors until the custom/handmade knife community agrees as to a measure for at what point a collector becomes a "world class collector". Of course, the same could be said regarding "world class maker".

websters; world–class
Function: adjective

We can't even agree as to whether we collect custom or handmade knives. ;) :)

websters; hand-made
Pronunciation: \ˈhan(d)-ˈmād\
Function: adjective
Date: 1603
: made by hand or by a hand process

websters; custom–made
Pronunciation: \ˈkəs-tə(m)-ˈmād\
Function: adjective
Date: 1845
: made to individual specifications <custom–made clothing>

1. I don't know....not that many.

2. That I do know....."world class" collectors tend to stick to proven makers, and lots of them....many of the makers we talk about, but not many here own....Loveless, Moran, Lake, Walker, Loerchner, Schmidt, McBurnette, Kressler.....your basic AKI lineup.....that is what they collect.....

but then there are subsets.....Louis Chow HAD a world-class subhilt collection.....now he is focused on the evolution of Loveless knives....Jack Lucarelli put together a world-class Lile collection, there is one forumite(fliprfly) who, with his father, has one of the most spectacular collections of Herron knives I have ever seen, http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=4250537&a=32131416&f= there is another forumite, tonyccw, who has a HUGE Lum collection....http://100lums.blogspot.com

These are just some examples.....sometimes, world class collectors don't even know they are "world-class".

I do understand Joss's question, but am seeking to explain(hopefully, successfully) that it is not so easily answered.

Most ALL of the "world class" collectors that I know, Phil Lobred, Don Guild, Hoffman, Ellis, Favano.........are aware of this Forum, and read stuff that we write from time-to-time....the only active contributor that I see in that "world" is Dave Ellis..who has been awesome with his concise and clear posts..but in general, "they" have little stomach or patience for the occasional contentiousness that we fall into...and if you want to see pictures of their stuff, you have to buy Dr. Darom's 4th book....or go to their websites, which you all have bookmarked, right?

As to if it would be good for "us" to have them post here?...yes.....would it be good for them?....maybe...and again...their collective patience is not that tolerant of the relative anarchy of internet forums.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Makes sense.

What are those websites? I know the San Francisco Knives site of course...

Oh, I see - yes, I knew the retail sites. The Jeff Gale site is new to me, thank you. JD

Does this thread address "world class collectors" or "world class dealers" ;)

Or I guess we are considering them one in the same? Or perhaps "professional collector/dealers" :D :)

I would be happy to post some pics, not sure how on this forum
Dave

That's interesting. Could you share why not on this forum? And also what kind of venue you'd be more interested in? For me your pictures on the other forum were one of the main attraction.

Thanks,

JD

I think he said he wasn't sure how to post the photos here, not that he didn't want to post here. I could be wrong, but that's the way I read it.
It would be pretty cool to see some of his collection.

For highlights of Dave's AMAZING collection of modern custom knives,
try pages 54-63 in my book "The Great Collections", published last year....

All the best,
