Do world class collectors come / post here?

Joss - he said he's not sure not sure how to post pics on this forum.

I think he said he wasn't sure how to post the photos here, not that he didn't want to post here. I could be wrong, but that's the way I read it.
It would be pretty cool to see some of his collection.

Ah - me poor foreign. Thank you apologize my bad writing or reading English.

:D

Dave - you can find directions to post pictures here:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/faq.php?s=&do=search&q=picture&match=all&titlesonly=0

In practice , it uses the usual vb code tags:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/misc.php?do=bbcode

So for example, [img]http://www.exquisiteknives.com/images/kressler_folder_websize.jpg[/img]

will show up as:

This is one page in Dave Ellis' section from "The Great Collections" that is
my personal favorite...... Five amazing priceless folders by Wolfgang Loerchner.

All the best,

Stunning Loerchner collection. I just got back from seeing the man himself earlier today himself at the CKG show. He had but one knife, but that one knife alone was worth the trip.

So if I understand correctly,I either have to pay for a membership or only post pics that are already on my website?
I post pics on the other site because it is free (I do not have a paid area or whatever)and it is simple,I attach pics from my C drive. If I can do that here I will be happy to share some of my piece's.
a large part of my collecting enjoyment come's thru sharing my stuff and most of you reading this will appreciate them.
Thanks
Dave

Dave,

I don't know that there is another way for you to post for free. However, if that can be of any help, I would be delighted to host pictures for you on my hosts (for free of course). If you are interested, send me a quick email at j.delage@gmail.com, there's a couple options.

You mean you guys collect knives, I thought you all just like to argue?:D

LOL...i just caught that :)

In my view, one does not have to collect Moran and Loveless to be "world class"...in my view, a "world class" collection would be the best representation of a genre...so for example, a "world class" collector of tactical knives would have pieces from all the major tactical knifemakers (Emerson, Carson, Ryan, MSC/DDC, Brend, Mad Dog etc.) and their collection would include exclusive pieces such as prototypes, one-offs, knives actually used in combat or submitted as trial knives for military contracts etc. etc.

how many collections reach the million dollar level?

i think i remember reading about a million dollar loveless collection being sold a few years back

Joss,
I think it is incorrect to equate "world class" with "High dollar"

I have seen some "high dollar" collections with lots of pieces that looked like pickled crap, if you get my drift.

There are several other Top Collectors that are here. But they do not use their given names. And I don't blame them. There can be at times, a lot of mean spirited attitude here. This is one of the biggest reason I rarely post here anymore. That said, HEY Dave! Glad to see you!!! Just remember to tread lightly here. And of god's sake, Never but Never give an opinion on anything here. Your so right SAR!

Another Top Site is http://knifelegends.com/ And Yes, many dealers are top Collectors as well. Thats how they became dealers in the first place! It's called enjoying your hobby. Exactly how most Makers became Makers. We Love Knives. Same-Same!

To elaborate further on Anthony's post, it obviously takes money to acquire a "world class" collection, however money definitely doesn't guarantee such.

IMO, to acquire a "world class" collection a collector needs to have knowledge, taste, time, contacts and luck.

It takes years of getting to know the knives, the players in the game and many times it still just boils down to being in the right place at the right time.

How many opportunities do average collectors even have to get the really great knives? Most all the "world class" collections we have discussed here are owned by dealers. That's because in many cases they possess all of the above.

I have with me at home one of the WORLD's GREATEST CUSTOM
KNIFE COLLECTIONs.

I put it together myself, all of the nearly 2,000 amazing knives!
So far it is housed in 5 books... :) But it is growing steadily by the year... :)

And, I post here from time to time, under my full name as well!

All the best,
David Darom

do post, however, they are in the business, i.e. selling product/services to others within the knife world. What I do not see is those that collect for personal pleasure, have World Class Collections and NO consideration of financial gain. Just an observation, perhaps I am missing some that qualify and post but just cannot think of any.

I would love to see these people jump in with their thoughts and share pictures of their collections, it would be great.

If one were to have say a collection worth a million+, posting in public forums might not be the wisest thing to do, even with the relative anonymity, insurance, alarms. I would guess that many world class collectors, and not just knife collectors, try to stay out of the limelight for this reason.

I, at best, may have been a Florida-class collector :), and having sold much of my collection, merely a former one. :(

Recently though, I've been putting together a world-class Frost Cutlery collection, surprisingly affordable. :D

My Dad and I are just collectors. We might trade a knife in and out every now and then or even sell one on occassion, but it is always to aquire something else.
Our focus is mostly knives by Mr. Herron. There are a few others mixed in, but I'd say 90% are from Herron.
We certainly did not start out trying to be collectors. Dad bought his 1st Herron more than 30 years ago. All of the knives we bought back in those days were "users". Then we added a folder here and a fighter there. before we new it we were clasified as collectors.
It is all because of the love for a great knife and the appreciation of a great maker.

In my opinion, Jay, you and your Dad have accumulated over the years
quite an amazing collection!!
Can you name the other knifemakers and indicate the picture showing their knives?

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

And a fantastic Collection it Flip!!! As you know, George and I went way back. I really enjoyed the link to your collection that you sent me a while back. WOW! Is all I can say!

David,
I don't have photos of all of the knives, but most of the other makers are from SCAK (South Carolina Association of Knifemakers) and/or students of Mr. Herron.
They are from Geno Denning, Wayne Hendrix, Eddie Lee, Sam Cox (Not sure if he was in SCAK) and Larry Kemp. I have a couple of Steve Johnson's knives as well.
The Denning and Hendrix knives are on the web site. Most are towards the end of the "Hunters and Skinners" set and a Denning Sub-Hilt is the last photo in the "Fighters and Double Grinds" set.

Thanks for the kind words,
Jay
