Do you actually use your walking stick for walking?

Looks like I'll have to make a walking stick soon. For grip, I'll put the base of an extra-hard drill bit in the bottom, but have a rubber cane tip go over it to slow wear and protect tree roots when its not necessary to use.

Foxhole Atheist,

A lanyard can be made which will readily slide for adjustment but clinch under pressure with the use of a prusik knot or taut-line hitch. http://funditor.110mb.com/wiki/index.php/Taut-line_Hitch

I have had a Crawford Surival Staff for years now.. I love that thing, and its got quite alot of survival value built into it. The blow gun may seem hokey but I can actually pick dates on a calander and hit them fairly easy at pretty decent ranges, and it sticks the dart good. I could see getting a small animal with it from maybe 20 feet.
Also the long blade attached to it makes a damn formidable spear, that could be used to spear fish, or defend yourself.

I use mine every day now, wherever I walk. If I am going into businesses then I will put a rubber cane tip on it to save the tip. My shepherds hook attachment works wonders. I get a lot of looks but it does help me get around and I did not pay that amount just to have it sit at home.

When I used the lower section of mine for a cane, I had the dagger screwed into the tip. If I needed it for SD, the cane itself with the t-handle would make a decent war hammer. But if I had tome to unscrew the tip, I'd have a dagger in my left hand to go with the hammer in my right. Nice combination in New York City. Illegal as hell, but

I bought a wild cherry walking staff from plumcreekstaffs.com a couple of weeks ago and am very pleased with the product.

I do what might be called country lane walking. I live in central kentucky and the area where I live is fairly hilly.

My biggest surprise was how much easier the staff made climbing up some of the local hills :)

The wild cherry is very light, about 3/4 inch in diameter and comes with
a high density foam grip and a thick leather thong to keep the staff locked
to my hand. The staff has a couple of gentle "waves" instead of just a
straight stick.

Perhaps the most amazing thing is that the maker sent me the staff on "approval". ie I did not have to pay upfront :D

How many businesses do you know that can do that!

Jerry

Buying on approval is very cool. I suppose that would work for niche businesses where you are only dealing with a certain class of people or have personal relationships with them. I can think of very few things I'd do that with as a seller.

Here's mine. I actually have a few, but this is the staff that I use most often. It's bamboo, so it's lite weight and fairly tough. Still waiting for the perfect one to find me though.

Hey Myal,

As I've had a bad back for 35+ years, I can appreciate what you're going through. Best of luck - heal up quickly.

Doc

Thanks Doc

I feel for you , having hassles for so long , I had trouble with my back for about 14 yrs or so only , long enough to know better but not long enough to get used to it ..

Sweet looking stick!!!

We tried walking sticks (aluminum, adjustable) for the first time this summer when we hiked down and back up in the Grand Canyon. They made a huge difference, really makes it easy both directions.

I sometimes use a rattan jo staff. It's very light and strong, and the uniform diameter and smooth outside appeal to me.

It's not very heavy, so it wouldn't work as a club as well as some other materials mentioned here. But it works just fine otherwise, and is easy to store in the trunk of my car so I can always opt to take it or leave it behind.
