Do you all have a favorite side arm you carry in the woods/camping/hiking?

My EDC & my favorite is my GLOCK 19  I have a ccdw permit here in Ky. & I pac almost everywhere I'm allowed:D Sometimes when I'm on my ATV or camping or hiking I carry my Rock Island M1911-A1 ;) or my S&W 22A

Us Canadians are not allowed by the Mommy State to carry tools like a side arm. So i carry my solid ash walking stick and a KABAR Kukri.

I often carry a Mak in a Fobus paddle sheath.

If I'm carrying a handgun while hiking, it will most likely be my S&W Model 22-4 .45ACP 4" barrel revolver or my Ruger Mk III 22/45 with fixed sights and 4.5" barrel.

Why shoot snakes? At PWYP in N. Carolina, there are rattlers in the area and the landowner has had a few run ins. I had snakeshot loaded then. I've never encountered them up here in New England and they aren't a problem but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be. With the type of camping I practice, I'm often in man made primitive shelters. You never know what could crawl in. I know how to avoid them for the most part but again, you never know.

That being said, I would shoot them if little kids were in the area. Sure, the best remedy is not to take the kids out in the woods but I wouldn't deny them that. Having the rounds with me is more like theory than practice but I still carry them just in case.

Browning 22 Buckmark. If big bears are present I would carry the 45 LC or 44 Mag. Both are Ruger Blackhawks. Human Varmints, 45 Auto. For small game and general camping though, the 22 riffire rules.

In PA I'm more concerned with defense againt idiots. I carry either a Glock 19, 17, 1911A1, or a S&W Model 19-5 2.5 inch .357. On day hikes I often just carry my Kahr K-9 or a SS Taurus 85 J-frame .38.

Here in Brazil the laws about carry have changed so I don't do it anymore but I used to carry a 2 inch Rossi J-frame .38 on my wilderness trips. Here we are limited to .38 special and .380 only. +P+ 158 grain JHP is as good as it gets here.

On my Alaska trip I carried a S&W Model 57.41 magnum in a chest rig and a 9 shot Hi-standard .22 revolver in my daypack. Mac

woods......hmmmmm

lets see...glock 17 for work....with beretta 21a backup....mossberg590....

springfield XD9SC for off duty...with 21a backup....no shotgun

woods woods woods.....wow....never really thought about it...could be anything... browning hi power, walther p-38 p-4, colt 1991a1, hi standard sentinel, cz 50, CETME, M1 Carbine (iver johnson model), mossberg 500, winchester 70, ruger 10-22, ruger redhawk, gp100, blackhawk, vaquero,....who knows? its just what i feel comfortable with that day...

My EDC is either a S&W 642 5-shot hammerless .38 Spec Airweight or it's larger sibling, a 296 5-shot hammerless .44 Spec AirLite - both in Mika's pocket holsters. They've accompanied me, particularly that 296 - for some years. My ideal 'woods stomping' duo now would be the new Buck #408 Kalinga Pro and my first-ever S&W, a 625 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt. The only holster I have for it now is a spartan OWL black leather OWB style... I need a better one. If my .45 Colts won't be enough, just where the heck am I??

I try my best to carry my Springfield Mil-Spec in stainless wrapped in Andrews leather.
Thats my baby that you see in my avitar.
I will carry my Walther PPKS if I want to go light and comfortable. I bought a cheap IWB holster for it, but it feels comfortable and secure. I should carry more often but I don't.
Some of these damn Michigan laws unnerve me.

i usually carry my duty gun . a hk usp 45 compact , loaded with hornady tap +p 230 gr. why ? the usp can go through hell and still be reliable and said load can pack a really good punch four or two legged.

S&W 686 stainless, 6 shot 357 mag in a Bianchi holster w/o a rifle, or a Colt Single Action Frontier 22 lr in a fanny pack with a rifle.

Gents,
Very nice sidearms shown and mentioned here!. I am getting a real taste for a walk in the woods again today.. Well, I finally got around to finding a photo of the old gal. She is a 1970's Colt Python .357 as stated earlier and is carried in an a black nylon Uncle Mikes #2 RH Sidekick holster. I have been looking for a more comfortable holster to carry the old lady in, but cannot seem to find anything that feels as nice as the cheap UM.. any suggestions from you folks in the know??

I have a high standard 22lr. caliber 9shot revolver with a 6" barrel that is my favorite to pack camping / fishing.

On the news this morning a story from Alaska. Women with their dogs were attacked by three wolves !! They only had pepper spray. The women said the wolves had no hesitation in attacking them !!! The wolves finally left after chewing on a dog . Puts a lie to the 'wolves would never attack people' that you hear from the idiots ! A pistol would have ended the attack quickly.

I have this exact same gun!. Super accurate at long range(45-50 yards, not feet, yards!) Mine is from the 1950's and has a little port hole on the right side at the cylinder location that expells spent powder/gas, and is annoying as hell to the shooter next to me(on my right side) when plinking with my pals:).

BTW, When was yours made if you know?

packs easy with the 4 3/4" barrel. Look at your intended carry system as well as the gun. The FA is fairly heavy, which along with the design of the gun, makes it a very pleasant shooter. My pack has a very heavy duty belt and it carries very well. With a light duty pack, it wouldn't work out so well and I'd probably go with a .357
