Do you automatically grab a certain (traditional) knife when you head into the woods?

When I head into the woods, I nearly always carry a couple of fixed blades and a modern OHO in addition to my traditional pocket knife. The traditional is usually a sowbelly or larger stockman carried in the RFP. Medium (7½-9") fixed blade on the belt, larger fixed blade in the daypack, and a OHO in my top left shirt pocket complete the ensemble.

I usually grab a SAK. For local day hikes/short trips/hikes with my lab, etc its a pioneer or a Soldier. On longer backpack trips in the Sierra Nevada Mountains its a SAK Huntsman. Most trips are above tree line and there is no wood and/or wood fires are prohibited, so no need to carry anything else for wood processing, fire making, etc. , not to mention the weight factor. (I find I use the scissors the most for cutting mole skin to deal with blisters! Ouch!)

Usually a SAK of some sort. If I'm alone, it's just a Farmer or Huntsman. If my young daughter comes along, I'll carry a customized Swiss Champ, so we can play with all of fun tools it contains.

For solo trips this year, the SAKs will have their place taken by my Remington R-4.

Like you, I usually carry a Buck 301 when camping. And for about the same reasons.
Right size. Good selection of blades. Stainless. Good heat treat. Built like a tank.
Me too,I wish they still made the yellow ones.

I often carry the Vic Farmer as well.

For me it's whatever the slip joint du jour is and a 3" or so bladed belt knife. I've got four that I normally choose from. A mix of steels, Damasteel (Sean O'Hare, gifted by a very good friend), 0-1/15N20 (Burt Foster hand forged random ladder damascus), 1084 (Mace Vitali hand forged), CPM-S30V (Tim Steingass).

Probably the knife I grab more often than any other when I head into the woods is one of my Kepharts:

For working in the woods I have Shrades 125ot and a 34ot.Deer hunting a fixed usually a Marbles or a Anza with a small stockman ie 34ot or a 303 Buck.

If I head to the woods, I usually just have whatever pocket knife of the day is in my pocket. But I will usually carry a sheath knife on my belt. Since 1969, it has usually been a Buck 102 woodsman. I bought one in 1969, and for 30 years was my go-to hiking/camping/fishing knife. By 2000 it was a sharpened toothpick, so the better half bought me a new one for my birthday. Since then, the 'new' 102 has been my go-to knife. If I'm traveling, it goes in the bag. I love the shape of the pattern as an all around knife. It serves very well as a modern little finn.

Very Nice. I bought myself a Buck 102 this year. I plan on giving it lots of play time over the summer. The size is absolutely perfect. Not too big. Not too small.

Case Sod Buster Jr.

I enjoy backpacking, canoeing, bicycle touring, and camping in the back country by my airplane. A couple years back I spent 50 nights in a tent.
I still get out nearly 40 nights a year.

While backpacking I am a gram counter and I very closely watch the weight of my gear. After trying many lighter weight options I have always come back to the Jr.
Besides it spreads peanut butter rather well.

Blue Skies and Tailwinds to you all.

These days it is a Schrade sharp finger and then whatever folder is grabbing my attention that week.

I think the OP was asking about a folding knife, but I see a lot of fixed blades posted. I prefer a fixed blade in the outdoors, but usually carry a damascus lockback also for food prep. I traveled the world for years and backpacked thousand of miles in that time and I only carried a Buck lockback(currently in Jack Black's collection) and I kept it in my first aid kit, and in all those years I may have used it a handful of times, shows how little of use a knife was to me. Times have changed and I enjoy carrying a knife daily. When I go into the wild, I usually have this Fallkniven Jarl Sk-1 in 3G steel,

Most of my life I've had one knife or another either in a pocket or on the hip but there's one knife that has truly earned the right to be acknowledged here... maybe even honored.

In the early 80's I found a Vic Huntsman (in like new condition) at a county park. I slipped that multi-tool into an emergency type belt pack that I've carried on every outdoor outing since. From day hikes in Michigan to 2 week camping expeditions in Colorado, during canoeing and fishing excursions, countless bird hunts, leisurely strolls with the dogs and short or long bicycle trips... that SAK has been with me. Cleaning fish, cutting firewood, making tent stakes, tightening screws, preparing food, removing ticks, splinters, thorns...whatever that humble Huntsman was called upon to do, it seemed to accomplished without fail.

I'm not in the great outdoors as often as I once was but when I am, that reliable Huntsman will be with me, just as it has always been, for nearly 35 years.

Think I'm a SAK fan? You bettcha! :thumbup::thumbup: Who wouldn't be? :D
